Vrangel Island is in the Far North, in the Chukchi Sea, near the Bering Strait, administratively part of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug… that is, it’s near Alaska (but Sarah Palin can’t see it from her house… silly wabbit). It’s a large island, being some 7,600 square kilometres (2,930 square miles) in extent. To give you some perspective on its size, Long Island (including Brooklyn and Queens) is 1,401 square miles (3,630 square kilometres), roughly half its area. However, Long Island has 7.7 million inhabitants (5400/sq mi, 2,100/sq km), whilst Vrangel is almost uninhabited, having only two small settlements due to the severe polar climate. The Vrangel Island Federal Strict Nature Reserve takes up the entire territory of the island, in addition to nearby Gerald Island, and includes 40 kilometres (25 miles) of the waters immediately offshore the islands. The island is the northernmost UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For them not in the know, Roman Abramovich is one of the richest oligarchs. At the time of the Khodorkovsky affair, Putin rusticated Abramovich to the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, albeit as Governor. Nonetheless, Abramovich got the message, and got it fast. He didn’t try to play with VVP’s cookies, no way, no how. However, does this mean that Abramovich is absolved, or, does it mean that he’s deeper in the kimchi? We’ll all have to see, won’t we?

Roman Abramovich voluntarily resigned as the deputy speaker of the parliament of Chukotka because of a law banning lawmakers from owning property abroad. Sergei Yolkin gives the gimlet eye to all of that.

2 October 2012. Our Great Russian Motherland… The Carpathians in the Far West… Carpatho-Russia: Faithful to the Vision of One Russia, One People, One Faith

_____________________________

Here’s a vista in the Carpathians. This is where the po-nashemu folks came from… the far western anchor of our narod… just as Chukotka is its eastern anchor, its southern anchor’s in the Altai, and the northern anchor’s in the Sevmorput. It’s Great Russia in more ways than one…

Chuck has lived with a friend for eleven years, ever since he was a chick. “He’s truly smarter than a lot of people. In fact, his intelligence is scary at times”. The last image is a little lost polar bear in Chukotka… we use it for wallpaper on our desktop… Nicky loves him.

It’s been a while since my last “Little Brothers” post… it’s time to get back into the habit of doing it, at least weekly… it’s fun. However, I’m no PETA nutter. Hunters and fishermen are the best! They’re the people with the greatest respect for animals that I know… as one said to me, “You only kill what you can use… God will get even with you if you kill for funsies”. Another friend, a farmer, said, “Pests gotta go, but if they stay off my land, I don’t go looking for them. If I shoot a groundhog, though, it goes in the pot, and its good eating, let me tell you”.

We share the world with God’s creatures…
