7 November 2015. Science and Theology… A Harmonious Duet… Not a Tusslin’ Twosome

Sergei Yolkin. To Science Day! 2010

I made this comment on FB:

My commitment to the findings of natural science doesn’t harm my faith at all. Evolution was simply the means of Creation… not the Source! Once one clears that (nonexistent) hurdle, it’s easy-peasy… theology and science are but two snapshots of the same situation… taken with different cameras. In like manner, you consult a doctor about medical matters or a lawyer on legal matters, never an elder! Conversely, don’t ask your doctor or lawyer about your soul’s health… that’s the elder’s job. Why are people making such a fuss about this? Here’s another analogy… science is the music… God is the composer. That’s an old chestnut, really… why have we forgotten it? However, there are those amongst us who buy into sectarian rot… they don’t know what Professor Andreyev said or what Vladyki Averky taught or what Fr Vladimir lived… but they insist that we enshrine heterodox fancy as fact. Our Faith is afraid of NOTHING… why don’t we act likewise?

I find that I need add nothing to the above. Any addition would be superfluous; it’d muddy my intent and meaning…

State Darwin Museum in Moscow Shows True Evolution

His Holiness SHOWS his opinion of modern science in this image… he’s not on the side of the bible-punchers and Young Earthers, that’s for sure!

When the State Darwin Museum first opened in 1907, its collection could fit in just a few cupboards. It’s since expanded into Moscow’s largest natural science museum, capturing the immense diversity of life on Earth. Click here for a 3½ minute vid in English on the museum.

Editor’s Note:

Russian Orthodox people should take note that HH is on the side of modern science, not the six-day-creation nutters. We acknowledge all truth… and the evolution record is there in the fossils… it’s true. Mind you, we don’t subscribe to Spencer‘s oddbod ideology of positivismlaissez-faireutilitarianism, Social Darwinism, and survival of the fittest, nor do we engage in mindless and nihilistic scientism. We don’t hold to perversions of the scientific record to fancy this or that notion. Evolution is true… that’s all that science can tell us. It can’t tell us about God; it can only tell us about physical reality. As for me, I believe that God both used evolution as His “tool” and set it in place as one of the natural laws of the universe… the Church blesses such a stance… it doesn’t bless Young Earth creationism of any sort. If you wish to believe such rot, become an evangelical sectarian… you’d be at home there with your fellow ignoramuses…

22 November 2012. A Point to Ponder… Do You Want to Vote for Those Who Suck Up to “Creationists?”

______________________________

The late election’s barely over, and all the Republican hopefuls for 2016 are lining up to kiss the naked bums of the so-called “Creationists“. That means that, as radical as they were the last time, the GOP intends to be even more obsequious to the Yahoo elements. How can any Orthodox Christian even think of voting for such? The Church stands for the Truth, and nothing truthful can harm it. HH is NOT a Creationist… indeed, he’s an avid follower of modern science. That means that we have to give the Creationists a wide berth. In fact, it’d be best if we gave all the “Evangelicals“, Pentecostalists, Mormons, et al a wide berth, for they’re all the same underneath (as “Evangelical” support for the Mormon sectarian Romney proved to all comers).

Evolution simply says that natural mutations occur, and that healthy mutations lead to development. Most evolution isn’t healthy, and these mutations die out. God created the natural world and its processes. He called it “Good”… so should we.

30 September 2012. A Riposte to the Creationists and “Young Earthers”

______________________________

Yes… you can believe in an “old” earth… yes… you can believe in theory of evolution… and BE A CHRISTIAN! In fact, the “conflict” between Creation and Evolution is mostly fictive. In fact, what are in contention are Creationism and Evolutionism… two rather different beasts. Evolution’s a modest proposal, at base… organisms change and pass on these changes to their offspring, these mutations can be good or bad. Creation’s equally modest, God is the Unmoved Mover, indeed, but he didn’t deign to tell us the details of it all (nor did He give us a precise timeline for it all).

Creationism is an overly-detailed fairy-tale spread by the ignorant and uneducated terminally-religious, with excessive and unprovable detail. Evolutionism is an overly-detailed fairy tale found amongst the scientifically-ignorant and overly-credulous votaries of scientism. Neither one is overly scientific or theological… both are “mud-pie ideologies”… that is, no grounup can believe in either one. It interesting to note the basic similarities between the Creationist and the Evolutionist (the Evolutionist is more Spencerian than Darwinian, by the way). The Creationist believes that God will swoop in and destroy all those nasty immoral people by sending them all to hell. The Evolutionist believes that religion will die out because mankind will “evolve past that”. In other words, neither one is inclined to effect compromise because they believe that they’ll be the only ones standing at the end of the day. Neither one is scientific… and Evolutionism is less scientific than Creationism is! Evolutionism, stripped of its pseudo-scientific verbiage is an unsupported belief that things and organisms are getting continually better (through a rather nasty Hobbesian war of “all against all”). In fact, Evolutionism is MORE theological than scientific, to wit, it states a thesis, and goes from there, it doesn’t pose a hypothesis… it doesn’t experiment… it doesn’t observe… it doesn’t synthesise. In short, it uses NONE of the components of the Scientific Method.

As for what’s really there, I take a good-sense view… the rocks are 2.5 billion (or whatever) years old… but how they ultimately got there is a mystery, and true scientists don’t know either. They do have hypotheses, but all of them will tell you, “If there’s new evidence, that goes out the window”. Theology and science are companions… BOTH become perverted if the one or the other’s missing. As for the “Young Earthers”… God did make the monkeys first, and if he chose to use them to evolve people, why, that wouldn’t collapse my faith. After all, the beasts do have sentience… not human, of course… science teaches us that. Besides… let everything that breathes praise the Lord… theology teaches us that.

Give this a thought…
