24 December 2011. The Intel Flows In on Jerome’s Folly…

____________________________

A kindly interlocutor sent me this (it stands on its own… it doesn’t need my two cents):

Yuck, Barbara, did you have to post snaps of Bishop Jerome on your blog without a kindly warning for the sensitive? 😦  According to a ROCOR clergyman, Shaw received the delightful Brother Nathaniel. I wonder if anyone has a photo of them together? I think the best thing about the MP subsuming the ROCOR would be the end of those Western Rite people. Anthony Bondi, the person in charge of it, is “interesting”. He’s only Subdeacon Anthony Bondi. They promised him the priesthood when he and his vagante sect entered, and then (only then?) discovered that he’d been married twice, and his second wife had been the wife of an OCA priest who’d left him to shack up with … get this… “Archbishop” Bondi. Can you believe that they really didn’t know that until after they’d received him? Has any vagante “bishop” not been dodgy in the relationship/marriage department? I suppose it’s a cause for rejoicing when the dodginess is only canoodling with adult women, but come on. Anyway, his “Fraternity of St Gregory” runs the Western Rite in the ROCOR now and they’ve frozen out the original people that Metropolitan Hilarion originally encouraged. They claim on their web page (click here) that they were originally encouraged by Fr Daniil Sysoev to come to Moscow and be received with their Western Rite crapola there. The mind boggles at it, doesn’t it? {What tips off all comers that Bondi’s lying is that he juxtaposes Sysoev and the Blunder, when the two couldn’t stand one another’s presence: editor}

I don’t know how true it is, but I hear Bondi’s liturgy’s more modern Roman than Sarum or anything else they pretend to (from what I’ve personally heard of their version of “Sarum”, its warmed-over BCP) and there was a priceless exchange on the Occidentalis list a while back… Bondi’s people discussed in nauseating detail how much Roman tat they could wear. You should know that those cream/gold vestments Shaw wore in the image are pure silk and were made by a young struggling vestment maker whose original customer, a ROCOR priest sucking up to Shaw, refused to pay up. The boy sent them to Shaw anyway, but no one anywhere gave him a penny, yet he spent his tax refund on food and gas to get them finished as well as buying the fabric. It makes me sick every time I see a snap of him in them.

******

There one has it. The perspirin’ minds are talking… and the story that they tell is disturbing. Let’s not lose sight of the prize. What we see in both the OCA and ROCOR apparats is a wholehearted willingness to step on the believers… a haughty contempt that you can feel. Whether it’s Jerome Shaw or JP Fathausen… or Victor Potapov or Alexander Webster, they’re a prize lot, with absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. They’re not like Lebedeff, who’s a competent historian and canonist, besides being personally nasty, or like Mel Pleska, who has the right instincts, but who’s outvoted by his bovine colleagues on the OCA Holy Synod (Mel should pull out the Jenga block to topple the whole edifice and embarrass ‘em all in public… it’d cut short the present charade that we’re all suffering through). However… Nathaniel and Jerome Shaw… if like calls unto like… WOW! As for Daniil Sysoev of happy memory having ANYTHING to do with this dodgy nutbag lot, I asked Russian friends, and they said NADA, NO WAY. This is what’s out there… have a care, kids, there be dragons, and some of ‘em are dressed as “sheep” (that is, “pastors” of the flock being devourers of the flock, instead)…

Editor’s Foreword:

A friend sent me the following… it’s GOOD STUFF… I’d classify it as “read n’ heed”… ‘nuff said! This is important for us as Jillions shares ALL of the Blunder’s theological errors with the added baggage of having a nastier personality and having a harpy harridan as a wife.

All of the below is from my friend up until the Afterword.

Divine Mercy Congress Ends… Spiced By Theological Disagreement

7 April 2008

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna celebrated Mass in St Peter’s Basilica on Sunday, 6 April, to close the First World Apostolic Congress of Divine Mercy. The conference was marked by a respectful theological disagreement between the Russian Orthodox Bishop Hilarion of Vienna and Cardinal Schönborn. The Orthodox prelate, in his presentation, argued that God’s mercy is so great that He doesn’t condemn sinners to everlasting punishment. The Orthodox understanding of hell, Bishop Hilarion said, corresponds roughly to the Catholic notion of purgatory. Cardinal Schönborn politely disagreed, noting that the idea expressed by Bishop Hilarion “isn’t a doctrine of the Church. While hell is a reality, it’s God’s Will for all men to be saved, and all Christians should pray that no one will be lost”.

******

I understand that the Roman Catholic (and, therefore, Uniate) dogma concerning the Reality of Purgatory is as follows:

  • The souls of the just which, in the moment of death, are burdened with venial sins or temporal punishment due to sins, enter Purgatory
  • Purgatory is a place and state of temporal penal purification
  • Purgatory will not continue after the General (Last) Judgement

Inveighing against their Orthodox interlocutors at the so-called “Union” Councils of Lyons (1274) and of Florence (1439), the Roman Catholics upheld and affirmed the teaching of the purifying fire (i.e., Purgatory) and the expiatory character of the penal sufferings:

The souls of those who depart this life with true repentance and in the love of God, before they have rendered satisfaction for their trespasses and negligence’s by the worthy fruits of penance, are purified after death with the punishment of purification.

Protopresbyter Michael Pomazansky on the Ultimate Things

Concerning the state of the soul after the Particular Judgement (the Judgment of an individual after his/her soul departs the body), the Orthodox Church teaches thus: “We believe that the souls of the dead are in a state of blessedness or torment according to their deeds. After separation from the body, either they immediately pass over to joy or into sorrow and grief; however, they don’t feel either complete blessedness or complete torment. For complete blessedness or complete torment, one receives that after the General Resurrection, when the soul is reunited with the body in which it lived in virtue or in vice” (The Epistle of the Eastern Patriarchs on the Orthodox Faith, paragraph 18). Thus, the Orthodox Church distinguishes two different conditions after the Particular Judgement… one for the righteous, another for sinners; in other words, paradise and hell. The Church does not recognise the Roman Catholic (and Uniate) teaching of three conditions:

  1. Blessedness
  2. Purgatory
  3. Gehenna (hell)

The Fathers of the Church usually use the name “Gehenna” to refer to the condition after the Last Judgement, when both death and hell will be cast into the “lake of fire” (Apocalypse of St John 20.15). The Church, basing itself on the word of God, acknowledges the torments of Gehenna to be eternal and unending, so, therefore, it condemned at the Fifth Ecumenical Council the false teaching of the Origenists that demons and impious people would suffer hell only for a certain definite time, and, then, would be restored to their original condition of innocence (apokatastasis in Greek). The Apocalypse of St John the Theologian calls the condemnation at the Universal Judgement the “second death” (Apocalypse of St John 20.14). However, it’s not for us to define the boundaries between the unutterable mercy of God and His justice or righteousness. We know that the Lord will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth (I Timothy 2.4); but man is capable, through his own evil will, of rejecting the mercy of God and the means of salvation. Worthy of attention likewise is the simple comment in this regard of Bishop Theophan the Recluse:

The righteous will go into eternal life, but the satanised sinners will go into eternal torments, in communion with the demons.

My Own Thoughts

Alfeyev, in his presentation, argued that God’s mercy is so great that He doesn’t condemn sinners to everlasting punishment. He said, “The Orthodox understanding of hell corresponds roughly to the Catholic notion of purgatory”.

  1. The absence of the possibility of everlasting punishment in Gehenna after the Last Judgement for incorrigible sinners who relentlessly reject God’s love and mercy contravenes Church teaching because it denies man’s Free Will. Men must come to God and Faith freely.
  2. As attested to by The Letter of the Eastern Patriarchs (1848)… itself a compendium and exposition of the teachings of the Holy Fathers throughout the ages… the Church knows of no state or place corresponding to the Roman Catholic (and Uniate) notion of purgatory, roughly, or in any other way.

Fr Michael was fond of saying that, strictly speaking, there are only three Theologians in the Church (St John the Apostle, Evangelist and Theologian, St Gregory Nazianzen the Theologian, St Symeon the New Theologian). Metropolitan Hilarion is certainly not cut from the same bolt of cloth. Speaking for myself, I’m going follow the Eastern Patriarchs, St Theophan, Fr Michael, and others such as the ever-memorable Fr Daniil Sysoev and Deacon Yuri Maksimov. I’d suggest your dear readers follow suit. After all, their ETERNAL lives depend on it. Frankly, we can do without Western-educated “wise men” trying to “teach” us.

Editor’s Afterword:

I can think of no one more thoroughly Orthodox than Fr Michael Pomozansky (I had the privilege of meeting him once, fleetingly, at Jordanville). Reflect on this… John Jillions is antipodes removed from Fr Michael… and is totally in agreement with the Blunder. In short, John Jillions isn’t Orthodox at all in his soul… like the Blunder, he’s a Uniate at heart and the sooner that’s exposed, the better off we’ll all be. After all, Jillions takes his salary from the Uniates… he’s their faithful servant and lickspittle supporter. Why would grounded Orthodox wish to give any responsible office to such a rebellious apostate? Reflect well on that…

8 October 2011. A Name to Know: Yuri Valerevich Maksimov

Deacon Yuri Valerevich Maksimov (1979- ), Islamic Studies scholar and bitter theological foe of Hilarion Alfeyev

_______________________________

Introduction

Yuri Valerevich Maksimov was born on 2 April 1979 in Moscow (RSFSRUSSR. He’s an Orthodox Deacon, religious scholar, writer, theologian, publicist, missionary, and lecturer at the Moscow Theological Academy. Yuri Valerevich is a member of the MP Synodal Working Group on the Elaboration of the Conceptualisation of Inter-Religious Relations and of the Expert Council of the RF Justice Ministry on the Countering of Religious Extremism. He’s also a member of the Theological Commission of the MP Interconciliar Presence.

Biography

His secondary education focused upon “film studies”. In 2001, he graduated from the Russian Orthodox University of St John the Theologian (RPUSIB), after studies in the Biblical-Patristics Faculty. Since 2002, he’s been a lecturer at the Moscow Theological Seminary, teaching a course in History of Religions, with a focus on Islam, and he’s often involved as an advocate or opponent on boards considering thesis papers for the kandidatura when the topic concerns Islam. Yuri Valerevich is the head of the Sixth Day (Шестодневъ) Missionary Educational Society, and he’s published several works against atheistic concepts of evolution, proposing an Orthodox interpretation instead. From 16 to 26 December 2008, he went to Thailand on a working visit, helping the development of Orthodoxy in that country. Deacon Yuri was very close to the late Fr Daniil Sysoev, and he headed Fr Daniil’s missionary school after Fr Daniil’s death. On 22 May 2010, Archbishop Yevgeni Reshetnikov of Verey (the Dean of the MDA) ordained him to the diaconate. Yuri Valerevich has written a large number of magazine articles and several books on religious studies. For some time, he edited the website Православие и ислам (Orthodoxy and Islam). Most of his publications deal with the history of Islam and the problems involved in relations with Islam, so, Deacon Yuri has earned a reputation as one of the best contemporary Orthodox scholars in Islamic Studies.

******

Deacon Yuri defends the traditional faith… ask yourself, “Why don’t the people here talk about him?” The answer will tell you much, not about Deacon Yuri, but about his foes…

Editor’s Note:

Deacon Yuri (along with the late Fr Daniil Sysoev) is a bitter and determined foe of the Blunder. That’s why he’s unknown in diaspora Orthodox circles. You see, the English-language material on Orthodoxy often passes through the hands of SVS, and they’re Yuri Valerevich’s opponents. Unfortunately, the ROCOR has succumbed to modernism… not outwardly (which is bad enough), but inwardly (which is FAR worse). Why do I say this? Vassa Larina and Andrei Psaryov… that’s why! Who would’ve thought that the official website of the ROCOR would EVER carry a defence of relations with Uniates? Read Vassa Larina’s impassioned defence of her ties with the Jesuit Bob Taft… that was OBSCENE, kids. Our co-religionists are suffering in the Western Ukraine, and Larina and Psaryov hobnob with and defend the enemy. Deacon Yuri shoots down the Blunder, especially the Blunder’s errors concerning apocatastasis (the Blunder is well-known for his defence of the errors of Clement of Alexandria), papal supremacy, and the Unia.

Deacon Yuri speaks for the REAL Church… the Blunder speaks for a pseudo-Church that holds up heretics such as Origen, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, Florensky, Bulgakov, and Vvedensky as exemplars. Note well that ADS taught that all those that I named in the previous sentence were either Church Fathers or figures worthy of emulation. Ponder this… John Jillions is WORSE than ADS ever was. Jillions would drag the Church so far into the mud that the OCA might even go outside the ambit of the Local Churches of Orthodoxy. Can we still pull back? Theoretically, yes… and one prays for that. Realistically, I think not… I fear that we’ll have to drain the chalice to the bitter dregs.

God preserve us…
