3 June 2016. Points to Ponder from Dietrich Bonhoeffer… How They Apply to Us Today

01 ship of fools

Don’t argue with konvertsy, “conservatives”, or HillyBillys… it’s pointless, fruitless, and without end. They refuse to see reality… if they won’t listen to reason or to God Himself and His Church, what makes you think that they’ll listen to you?

Here are three points to ponder from Dietrich Bonhoeffer:

  • Still more pathetic is the total collapse of moral fanaticism. Fanatics think that their single-minded principles qualify them to do battle with the powers of evil, but like a bull they rush at the red cloak instead of the person who holds it; they exhaust themselves and are beaten. Non-essentials entangle them; they fall into traps set by cleverer people.
  • Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; one can expose it, and, if need be, prevent it by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings at least a sense of unease. Against stupidity, we’re defenceless; reasons fall on deaf ears; they simply don’t believe facts that contradict their prejudgement… in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical… when facts are irrefutable, they just push them aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack.
  • The fact that the stupid person is often stubborn mustn’t blind us to the fact that he isn’t independent. In conversation with him, one virtually feels that one is dealing not at all with him as a person, but with slogans, catchphrases, and the like… that have taken possession of him. He is under a spell, blinded, misused, and abused in his very being. Having thus become a mindless tool, the stupid person will also be capable of any evil and at the same time incapable of seeing that it’s evil. This is where the danger of diabolical misuse lurks, for this can once and for all destroy human beings.

Don’t argue with likes of Rod Dreher or John Whiteford… don’t argue with those brainwashed by talk radio and Fox News… don’t argue with Chilly Hilly’s sleepwalking Upper Middle backers. It’d do no good of any sort and all that it’d do is irritate and piss you off for no good result. Yes, they’ve drunk the Kool-Aid and support objective evil, that’s true. However, there’s a difference between deluded “fellow travellers” and actual conscious devotees of evil (Whiteford is an example of the first; Dreher’s a good instance of the latter). Have a care with the first lot… but oppose the latter group at times and under all circumstances… this last group does propagate evil… they believe in it, it benefits them, so they’re soulless mercenaries of the various apparats (corporate, defence/intel, Church).

Reserve your God-given time and resources for those who’ll listen… as for the troglodytes… oppose them, don’t hate them, but don’t argue with them either. You do have better things to do…
