Today, DNR model-airplane buffs staged an event to mark the Day of the Soviet Air Fleet, gathering more than 40 professionals and amateur modellers at the A S Shcherbakov Central Park of Culture and Leisure. Stanislav Kim, Chairman of the DNR Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, Air Force, and Navy (DOSAAF), told us, “Age doesn’t matter in this sport… we have some very young kids participating, and some hard-bitten old stagers who’ve been at it for years”. The audience saw a variety of model aircraft, but as a participant told us, “In spite of the difference in appearance, they share similar engines, which can reach 30,000 rpm, with an output of about 1.5 horsepower”. The DNR DOSAAF and the DNR Ministry of Youth co-sponsored the event; at the end of the presentation, a number of local bands gave a concert in the park.

26 September 2012. Sergei Yolkin’s World. To Romney From the Depth of Rogozin’s Heart

To Romney From the Depth of Rogozin’s Heart

An-2s used by parachute clubs and DOSAAF in the Soviet Union and Russia often flew with the cargo door removed, to make it easier for parachutists to deplane. That’s the situation that Sergei Yolkin’s mining for laughs in this one. This is one of those things that “all Russians know”, and which would raise an automatic smile on every Ivan Ivanovich and Maria Ivanovna who saw it. That’s not the end of this joke… all Russians know that Dmitri Rogozin is, perhaps, the most anti-American member of the government (hell, I think that he’s more anti-American than Udaltsov and Zyuganov are). That adds a layer of sarcasm to this. In short, another complex Yolkin play on words, people, and images.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri Rogozin jokingly suggested sending an Antonov An-2 aircraft, “the door of which sometimes swings wide open in flight,” to Mitt Romney’s campaign staff in an off-the-cuff reaction to the Republican candidate’s puzzled query, “Why don’t aircraft windows open?”
