It’s a Heat Wave! Get Out the Speedos! Record Warm Day in Moscow on 25 December

00 Moscow at night. 01.10.13

The Fobos weather monitoring centre said that Wednesday was Moscow’s warmest 25 December since 1910. A meteorologist said, “Today, we shattered the record of 3.1 degrees [37.58 degrees Fahrenheit] in Moscow, set in 1910. We registered air temperatures of up to 3.5 degrees [38.3 degrees Fahrenheit] this afternoon”. She said that they expect more weather records broken on Thursday.

6 May 2013. Sergei Yolkin’s World. Right After the Permian Extinction

Right After the Permian Extinction

This is a typical Yolkin play on words and current events. Perm, of course, is a city in the Urals. The Permian Extinction was caused by a massive meteor strike, and there was a meteorite strike in Chelyabinsk (which is relatively-close to Perm) earlier this year. Put together the meteor events and the fact that “Perm” and “Permian” are close homonyms, along with Yolkin’s irrepressible sense of irony and humour, and, voilà, you get the above caricature. Another “score” for Yolkin, I say…

Scientists believe that the four-legged reptile that became the ancestor of dinosaurs, birds, and crocodiles began to populate the earth after the great Permian extinction. Here’s how it all seemed to Sergei Yolkin.

On 16 April, in south-eastern Iran, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred. The event happened at 14.44 MSK (20.44 AEDT 11.44 UTC 06.44 EDT 03.44 PDT), with a radius of approximately 82 kilometres (51 miles). There are no accurate figures on victims and survivors yet. For more information on why earthquakes happen, see the Infographic. The tremors of the powerful earthquake in Iran were also felt in various parts of Pakistan, especially, north of the capital of Islamabad, Karachi in the south, Lahore near the Indian border, and in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan (a province bordering Iran). As far away as the Persian Gulf states, people felt seismic tremors. As a precaution, offices and living quarters in the UAE’s capital of Abu Dhabi and Dubai were evacuated; earthquake alarms in skyscrapers went off, warning of disaster. At present, thousands of people are on the streets waiting for permission to return to offices and homes. No damage was reported. Earlier, the Deputy Head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, Mohammad Ahmadian, said that the design specifications of the Bushehr nuclear facility stipulate that the site can withstand up to magnitude 9 earthquakes.

His Holiness SHOWS his opinion of modern science in this image… he’s not on the side of the bible-punchers and Young Earthers, that’s for sure!

When the State Darwin Museum first opened in 1907, its collection could fit in just a few cupboards. It’s since expanded into Moscow’s largest natural science museum, capturing the immense diversity of life on Earth. Click here for a 3½ minute vid in English on the museum.

Editor’s Note:

Russian Orthodox people should take note that HH is on the side of modern science, not the six-day-creation nutters. We acknowledge all truth… and the evolution record is there in the fossils… it’s true. Mind you, we don’t subscribe to Spencer‘s oddbod ideology of positivismlaissez-faireutilitarianism, Social Darwinism, and survival of the fittest, nor do we engage in mindless and nihilistic scientism. We don’t hold to perversions of the scientific record to fancy this or that notion. Evolution is true… that’s all that science can tell us. It can’t tell us about God; it can only tell us about physical reality. As for me, I believe that God both used evolution as His “tool” and set it in place as one of the natural laws of the universe… the Church blesses such a stance… it doesn’t bless Young Earth creationism of any sort. If you wish to believe such rot, become an evangelical sectarian… you’d be at home there with your fellow ignoramuses…
