Post-Maidan Ukraine: Whites Only Pools and Segregated Transportation

00 Ukrainian Catholic Consciousness 01. 06.10.14

______________________________

Although Western media touted the Maidan revolution as a step toward “democratic” values, the new Ukraine may have succeeded in looking eerily like the USA prior to the Civil Rights Movement… it’s facing systemic issues with racism. Last month, Asi, a 23-year-old refugee from Sierra Leone, boarded a bus with her 8-month-old son in Užgorod. After living in the Ukraine for six months, says she’d experienced racism on almost a daily basis. However, upon boarding the bus, a violent outcry from the other passengers confronted her. They shouted, “She’s not like us! Tie her to the fence together with the kid!” Violently forced off by the passengers, Asi was left standing on the street as the bus driver called the police. The police handcuffed the young mother and inexplicably carried her away. This story, which made the headlines of a number of Ukrainian newspapers last month, is only one example of several in a recent wave of racism to hit the post-Maidan Ukraine. Many black individuals, be they residents or visitors, have described varying degrees of racist treatment, some subtle, some preposterously blunt.

Zhan Beleniuk, a professional wrestler who lives in Ukraine, spoke to the Observer about his experiences with everyday prejudice. A stranger asked Zhan, “Are you Mike Tyson?” The man seemed shocked when Zhan told him “No”. Other instances have been more alarmingly discriminatory. Sergei Ratushnyak, former mayor of Užgorod and Rada Peoples Deputy, reportedly turned minorities away from an aqua-park he owned, saying, “We only let in Užgorod residents; we only let in white people”. According to the Observer, Ratushnyak also justified his actions by blaming the “syphilitic and tuberculosis-ridden Gypsyhood of the area and of the whole world”. He said, “During last year we had a 14-fold increase in AIDS cases in town. I demand compensation for all my expenses on buying and building [the pool complex in case ‘Gypsies’ are allowed into the aqua-park by the authorities]”.

The racism also extends to Islamophobia. In June, a mob attacked Jordanian exchange students in  Kharkov. Four were rushed to the emergency room with head injuries and knife wounds. Two dogs were stabbed to death because they belonged to “enemies”. Perhaps, the most frightening part of this rise in racial hatred is the inability… or unwillingness… of local authorities to do anything about it. Authorities never disciplined the individuals responsible for the abuse faced by Asi on the bus in Užgorod. Rather than address the Kharkov mob appropriately, Valentin Nalivaychenko, then-head of the SBU, blamed the incident on… who else… Russia, saying on the TV-show Shuster-Live, “Local gangs might have been provoked and inspired by foreign special services, to put it bluntly… by the Russians”. Whilst many maintain hope that Kiev will right its wrongs, that’s seemingly becoming less and less likely. Zhan told the Observer, “More than a year has passed, and not a single change”.

History Shows “Yanukovich Was Right to Oppose EU Association Deal”

Contra Magazin, an Austrian media outlet, argued that instead of the promised prosperity and cheap Russian gas, the Ukraine has to deal with a civil war and an economic collapse. Ukrainians were naïve to believe that the association agreement between Kiev and Brussels would usher in an age of careless affluence. When legitimate Ukrainian President V F Yanukovich refused to sign it, they took to the streets in what the media called the Euromaidan revolution. The new Kiev junta finalised the agreement, only to subject the Ukraine to “shock therapy”. Contra observed, “It’s becoming increasingly clear that [Yanukovich, deposed in an American-sponsored coup,] was absolutely right in his reservations” towards the document. Ukrainians are increasingly aware of this. Contra pointed up that the implications of the deal went further than any other agreement signed between the EU and a third-party, they’re truly damaging. The Ukraine has to carry out reforms to converge its legislation to that of the EU to the point when pan-European laws will become the norm. These changes would lead to (and have to an extent already resulted in) a radical privatisation and introduction of market-based pricing. The latter development makes it impossible for the government to offer energy subsidies, which means that ordinary Ukrainians have to pay ever-soaring utility bills. Many can no longer afford this. Contra concluded, “Taking into account the looming winter and the collapsing economy, these steps are a death sentence for tens of thousands of Ukrainians”. The agreement, hailed by the current Ukrainian junta and Brussels, also introduced restrictions on the main remaining Ukrainian export sector… agriculture.  The EU has to tackle overproduction in the agricultural sector and it doesn’t need competition from the Ukraine.

Editor:

Let’s not be coy… Victoria Nuland, the architect of the neofascist Euromaidan coup, is a godless neocon Republican… a typical nihilist GOP greedster. Did you know that she and Chilly Hilly got on famously? She also got on famously with Richard Cheney, GWB’s war criminal Vice-President. The USA wanted to topple Yanukovich as he headed a semi-socialist state, and American Free Market pigs wanted to topple that and plunder the corpse, just as they did in socialist Yugoslavia and socialist Libya… just as they undermined the socialist DRA, which was closer to the USA in outlook than any of its Talibanesque successors… as they’re trying to topple socialist Syria… as they’re trying to topple socialist China and a Russia that’s increasingly turning back to socialism. Do note the common thread in this. The Republican filth oppose socialism and paint it out as evil. The Democratic Liberals are just as bad… they oppose socialism, too… as you can see in those such as Chilly Hilly and Butcher Biden. Only one American politician has the guts enough to call himself a socialist… Bernie Sanders.

What I find saddening is that the ultra-left doesn’t understand that a President Sanders would end warmongering in foreign parts, simply because it’s unaffordable. It wants all kinds of notional revolutionary ruffles and flourishes… which are stuff n’ nonsense, signifying nothing. This present sad end for the Ukraine, which, indeed, may result in dissolving the post-1991 Ukrainian successor-state, came from Washington, and it came equally from Republican and Liberal Democratic filth. As I say, the saddest part is that many on the American Left attack the only candidate who has the potential (and reason) to stop it. I gotta walk away from this one. I’m called a “commie” by the Republican ignoranuses and a “Republican Troll” by the Liberal Democratic ignoranuses… how can I be both at once? It simply shows how incoherent American “conservatism” (see Rod Dreher) and American “liberalism” (see Chilly Hilly) are… may God preserve us all.

Expert sez Yarosh Boast about a New Revolution in the Ukraine is a Sham

00 kiev right sector demonstration. 230715

______________________________

Today, political scientist Kirill Cherkashin (Kandidat in Political Science) told us, “Yarosh‘s statement about a new revolution in the Ukraine is doubtful. Anything coming from the Right Sector is a sham. They don’t have enough strength to topple Poroshenko’s government. All of this blathering about a ‘new Maidan’ and a referendum are merely attempts to draw attention to themselves. The US government will support Poroshenko, not Yarosh. Firstly, Yarosh is a rather detestable figure… he’s a neo-Nazi. Secondly, the radicals in his movement are very difficult to control. Now, that’s perfectly clear [to everyone]. This faction won’t become an influential force in the Ukraine; in the near future, they’ll try to push them to the side, but they’ll try to use the Right Sector. At present, [the radicals] aren’t a serious threat to the current structure in Kiev; they can easily handle them. The actions taking place between the extremists and the Kiev authorities might lead to a formal reconciliation, but in fact, the Right Sector would lose its current positions. However, they can’t do it immediately, because it has enough supporters. It may not come to that, though… they don’t need a split amongst themselves”.

Yesterday, D A Yarosh, the leader of the extremist Right Sector, said that a new phase of the Ukrainian Revolution was about to begin… one that’d free the country from “domestic occupation” by overthrowing the government and holding a referendum to express “no confidence” in Poroshenko’s government.
