Russia SLAMS Trump’s Cuba policy

Russia supports the legacy of Comrade Fidel and respects Cuba’s socialist vision

The MID RF expressed solidarity with Cuba and cautioned against a return to “Cold War rhetoric”. It condemned moves by the Trump Administration to reimpose a ban on Americans travailing to Cuba as well as a likely return to many previously lifted sanctions dropped during Barack Obama’s historic thaw with Havana. Trump came out with hardline policies on Cuba in a lengthy campaign-style speech from Miami, home to many anti-Communist Cubans. The MID RF released a condemnatory statement saying that the USA’s “arrogant style of doing business with Cuba is pointless”. It also said that if the USA fully returns to the era of embargo, blockade, and sanctions, the USA would be totally out of step with the expressed will of the UN General Assembly. Russia reaffirmed its position on Cuba in the following way:

We reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with Cuba… a friendly peace-loving country, an authoritative member of the international community, which has a recognised constructive role in Latin America and in world affairs.

Moscow and Havana have been close ever since the Cuban Revolution of 1959, relations were somewhat strained in the 1990s but have seen become close and fruitful again under President Putin. In many ways, this is the clearest sign yet that Trump intends to run for President in 2020. Republicans long used the issue with Cuba to cultivate votes among anti-Communist Cubans living in the important state of Florida. Trump’s Cuba policy is likely nothing more than an attempt to win future votes in an important US state.

George Zimmerman, Acquitted of Murdering Trayvon Martin, Arrested for Aggravated Assault

Florida police arrested George Zimmerman, acquitted in the murder of unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin, on an aggravated assault charge. Zimmerman had multiple encounters with the law in the last eighteen months since his acquittal. The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said that they arrested 31-year-old Zimmerman in Lake Mary FL on Friday night; now, he’s at a local gaol. His scheduled court appearance is at 09.00 EST on Saturday. No further details were forthcoming on the arrest.

Friday’s arrest isn’t the first run-in Zimmerman had with the law since his acquittal. In November 2013, Zimmerman faced charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, domestic violence battery, and criminal mischief following a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. Two months earlier, cops detained Zimmerman after his estranged wife called police, claiming that he’d threatened her and her father with a gun and punched her father in the face. In both cases, the alleged victims declined to press charges.

In 2005, Zimmerman’s ex-fiancée also filed a restraining order against him, alleging domestic violence, prompting him to file a reciprocal restraining order. The judge who presided over Zimmerman’s initial bond hearing called the 2005 incident “run of the mill”. In September 2014, Orlando FL Channel TV news reported that police said Zimmerman threatened to kill a driver during a road rage incident in Lake Mary, and he later showed up at the man’s workplace. The man claimed Zimmerman, who was carrying a gun, asked, “Do you know who I am?” before threatening, “I’ll fucking kill you”. The unidentified driver also opted not to press charges.

On 13 July 2013, a jury acquitted Zimmerman on charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter after shooting Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old black teenager, dead in the streets of Sanford FL. Zimmerman, who was in a physical scuffle with Martin at the time of the shooting, claimed he acted in self-defence. The prosecution argued that Zimmerman racially profiled the unarmed teen and instigated the fight that led to the shooting. The incident sparked a national debate on race and self-defence laws, which led to the current “Black Lives Matter” protests across the USA.

101-Year-Old Florida Congressional Candidate Plans Early Bird Concession: Joe Newman Still Fighting Good Fight… Knows He’ll Lose

Hours before Election Day, Joe Newman already had a gracious “congrats to the winner” letter written and his concession party planned. Seems it’s easy to be a good loser when you are 101-years-old. Newman is at the end of a quixotic write-in campaign for US Congress from southwest Florida, and he’s not letting his infinitesimal chances of victory stand in the way of a good party. The get-together is due at 19.00 EST on Election Day at a pizza place in Sarasota. It’s a little late for the early bird special, but just in time to watch the votes come in. What’s the only thing that could spoil the fun? Joe himself! Give this centenarian a microphone and you have a long night ahead of you. He said, “You get me on a soapbox and you’ve got trouble”.

Born in 1913, Joe Newman is doubtless the oldest candidate for Congress this year. The incumbent he’s challenging, Republican Vern Buchanan, is a relative baby at 63. Florida’s 16th district stretches up Florida’s Gulf Coast from Venice up past Bradenton. The district is reliably Republican… so much so that the Democrats essentially gave up on it. Buchanan’s Democratic Party challenger, former NFL player Henry Lawrence, raised just 48,000 USD (2.1 million Roubles. 294,000 Renminbi. 2.94 million INR. 54,700 CAD. 55,000 AUD. 38,200 Euros. 30,000 Pounds) election cycle to Buchanan’s 1.5 million USD (66 million Roubles. 9.2 million Renminbi. 92 million INR. 1.7 million CAD. 1.72 million AUD. 1.2 million Euros. 940,000 UK Pounds). In that gap, Newman saw an opportunity. The retired accountant got the idea to run at a local meeting of The Nation magazine’s discussion group. His original goal was to get 101 votes, one for every year he’s been on this green earth. Now, he’s hoping to do better than that.

Newman said that he’s done just 10 or 15 campaign events, but the novelty factor of his age has rewarded him with heavy press coverage. In October, he faced off against Buchanan and Lawrence in a three-way debate. Newman, although a registered Democrat, is to the left of the Democratic mainstream. The son of a Studebaker factory hand from Indiana, Newman grew up in the Workmen’s Circle, the Yiddish socialist fraternal group. Newman and his wife, Sophie, were among the founders of The Logan Center, a school for developmentally disabled children. Sophie Newman and their daughter, Rita Jo, are both deceased. Newman now lives with his girlfriend Anita and her daughter.

Despite his age, Newman’s radical views have hardly mellowed with time. He said, “Rather than having industry and commerce as the tool which creates wealth for the benefit of the society, the market system is using government to protect its own interests and letting the society as a whole go to hell, but the essentials of life we can achieve through government, and government has to have the authority to create the wealth to do them”. He’s had harsh words for Buchanan, his Republican opponent, who he said fails basic economics by promising to cut taxes and balance the federal budget at the same time, saying, “My contention is that’s rather unrealistic, if not stupid”. On Election Day, he’ll be out reminding people not to let big money buy their vote… then, handing them fake million-dollar bills that say that they should vote for him. His family, at least, will be glad to see the race end… so he can stop getting himself so riled up at such a ripe old age. Newman mused, “Because I’m 101, they’re a little bit concerned that I can overdo it and push myself too hard”.

Fire investigators from were on the scene of a church fire in Palm Harbor FL well into the afternoon Tuesday, looking for anything suspicious. For members of the Greek Orthodox parish as they prayed this morning, there was a feeling that a higher power had stepped in and taken control. The fire at Ss Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Hellenic Orthodox Church started sometime after 03.00 EDT. Carol Dyer, who was delivering papers for the Tampa Bay Times, spotted it. She told us, “I saw smoke coming out from the roof around the eaves”. Dyer immediately called 911, but took no credit, saying, “God orchestrated it. He had his hand on these people. He didn’t want their place to burn down”. Fire crews from Palm Harbor were on the scene within minutes, fighting a blaze that ripped its way through a kitchen and common area. The fire and heat, charring and melting, even caused a chimney to buckle 15 degrees.

However, for church members, the structure itself was secondary to what was inside. Elias Damianakis explained, “The concern is for the sacred objects in the church. We are one of the few parishes in the south that have relics of the Saints”. The relics, fragments of the bones of three saints, Raphael, Nicholas, and Irene, brought here in 2004 by the Archbishop of Greece, were all in a case behind a wall.  The fire stopped just short of the wall. Irene Koulianos believes something kept the fire back. When asked if she thought it was the hand of God, she replied, “Absolutely”. On a morning where many would expect to see mourning, members outside the church did not. Irene said, “You witness miracles, what are you going to do? You just say thank God you can witness these things”. Therefore, they prayed to celebrate the divine, and to honour what they saw as divine intervention.
