We shouldn’t use “Theotokos” in English… we don’t in Russian! If “пресватая богородице” is good in Russian and Slavonic, then, “Most Holy Godbearer [and Mother of God]” is good in English, too. “Theotokos” was Schmemann’s goofy attempt to pander to the Greeks. If Greeks want to use “Theotokos”… that’s OK… they’re simply following their language and culture. Russian Orthodox people shouldn’t use it… we should follow our own tradition… to keep this title in our language, not Greek. “Most Holy Godbearer and Mother of God”… that DOES have a mellifluous and LITURGICAL ring to it (shades of the AV and the Geneva Bible, no?). You can hear a deacon proclaiming that in a joyous basso profundo in a darkened church amidst a sea of lit candles, can’t you?
