Tsipras Government Wins Confidence Vote in Hellenic Parliament

00 Alexis Tsipras. SYRIZA. Greece. 11.02.15

_______________________________

On Wednesday, the government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras won a confidence vote in the Hellenic Parliament. 162 members of his coalition supported him, 149 from the SYRIZA bloc and 13 from their coalition partners in ANEL, but 137 opposition lawmakers voted against the motion. The government needed to win the vote of confidence, as it must prove it has enough votes to pass bills in parliament before it can start work. Tsipras pledged that on Wednesday, following the vote of confidence, he’d start to implement actions to ameliorate the humanitarian crisis in the country.

5 February 2015. A Picture IS Worth a Thousand Words… The First Official Act of Alexis Tsipras

00 Alexis Tsipras. 05.02.15

The first official act of Alexis Tsipras as Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic was to lay flowers at the National Resistance Memorial. Hmm… who were the Greeks resisting? The Germans! Gee… aren’t they resisting the Germans today, too (many call the EU “the Fourth Reich” in reference to it having an almost-identical programme to the German economic policy for occupied Europe followed by the Nazis)? Tsipras was saying, “We’re not going to lay down and let the Germans fuck us again!” Mate this with President Putin’s personal invite to the Rodina… do I really have to spell it out for you? Tsipras had best watch his back… the Anglo Americans are sore losers…

It’s been 1,000 years… a full millennium… since the Baptism of Right-Believing King St Olav II Haraldsson of Norway in Rouen. He baptised and enlightened his people, stopping endemic civil strife, but he died in battle in 1030 fighting rebellious nobles. A year later, in 1031, the Church canonised him “with the agreement of the whole Norwegian people”. In his homeland, people call him “the eternal king”. He’s amongst the last of the Western European Orthodox saints and there are churches in Russia dedicated to St Olav, notably in Novgorod and in Staraya Ladoga, where he lived for several years. There’s another link with Orthodoxy and Norway… the most loyal soldiers in Constantinople New Rome were the Varangian Guard, who served from the 10th to the 14th centuries… who came from England, the Nordic countries, and Russia. Most of them fell in battle in the Fourth Crusade fighting the papist invaders. This unit lost its mostly Nordic character after that event.

Raise a glass and cheer, Norskis… it’s your day!

As for me, I favour the reintroduction of the pankration to the Olympics. Trust me, it’d become the most popular event, no question about it. Could you see heavyweight pankratists go at it? Now, THAT’S sport! Alas, we live in wimpy times… squash has a better chance of being part of the Olympics than the pankration has… damn, it’d be a prole sport to beat the band, wouldn’t it?
