The Florida shooter was a rightwing nationalist who the FBI was alerted to. It didn’t follow-up on it… what was the FBI response? Announce indictments on some goofy made-up charges against Russians… you’re falling for it… once again. Gotta give it to them.

I never want to hear anyone claim that [the USA] is a “Christian country” again as long we regularly offer up our children as sacrifices to the false idols of “freedom”, “the right to bear arms”, and the Constitution.

It’s happened again. It’s another mass shooting in the USA. It doesn’t happen in Russia… it doesn’t happen in China… it doesn’t happen in Iran. It doesn’t even happen in Afghanistan or Iraq… that is, non-war-related shooting… most folks have guns, but they’re not for indiscriminate shooting, like in the USA. People don’t shoot you unless there’s a reason… if you’re sneaking about their property at 2 AM, for instance. This chronic dysfunction speaks volumes about our post-Reagan rightwing “paradise”… why, we can’t restrict guns in any way… that’s impinging on people’s “freedom”. Note well that the neoliberals blubber about the “freedom” to own guns, the “freedom” to buy politicians, and the “freedom” to exploit working people (they ARE related), but they’re adamant that people shouldn’t have the freedom to organise in the workplace, the freedom to express themselves openly, or the freedom to access healthcare as a right (not as an expensive privilege).
The Republican Party refuses to act. The Democratic Party refuses to act. Both are in the pay of the NRA. BOTH. If we wanted to put in sensible gun-control norms like they have in Canada, we’d have them. Trust me, rural people and hunters in Canada have guns… that’s legal. It’s simply hard for gun-nutters and freakazoids to get guns, that’s all. You also can’t go about brandishing weapons, either. There are legal rules on transporting weapons, which only makes good sense.
Neoliberal pols refuse to rein in the NRA, both “conservative” and “liberal”… why, there’s gold in them thar hills and Wayne LaPierre is handing it out. That’s why I voted for Bernie in the primary and Dr Jill and Brother Ajamu in the general. We need a new way… the old one is killing us… literally. Oh, yes… the pro-gun nutters are mostly “pro-life”… fancy that…

On Friday, major car rental agency Hertz tweeted that it’d stop providing discounts on cars to members of the notorious National Rifle Association (NRA), following last week’s massacre at a Florida high school. This week, USA-based rental car firms National Car Rental, Enterprise, and Alamo also announced that they’d cut ties with the NRA, a lobbying group that consistently funds legal challenges to common-sense gun control measures in the USA. These companies are part of a rapidly-growing list of corporations and investment entities that discontinued business relationships with the NRA following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last week that killed 17 people (mostly teenaged students) and wounded 14 others. According to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) statistics cited by the New York Times, the USA sees over 33,000 people each year… many of them children… shot and killed by high-powered military-grade assault rifles and handguns,.
On Thursday, the First National Bank of Omaha (the largest privately-held bank in the USA) announced that it’s severing ties with the increasingly-rightwing NRA by not issuing NRA-branded VISA credit cards. A recent Bloomberg analysis revealed that many big investors divested gun company holdings while others push NRA members within the industry to adopt intelligent gun control laws in the USA. Bloomberg also reported that an increasing number of pension funds and municipalities demand that stock portfolios eliminate companies that manufacture or sell firearms. According to Gizmodo, one of America’s largest security software companies, Symantec, also ended a business partnership with the NRA. Symantec (maker of Norton antivirus software) acquired LifeLock, an identity theft protection company, in 2017 and the branch likewise ended discounts for NRA members.
