The Heat Will NOT Pass!

Yolkin’s using hyperbole here. At Verdun, the French rallying cry was, “Ils ne passeront pas!” (They shall not pass!). In other words, we’ll get through it, as we do every summer… there’s no need to get overly dramatic about it. Do you catch the whiff of King Canute and the tide that I do? Great minds DO think alike…

30 June 2013. RIA-Novosti Infographics. How to Beat the Heat with Ease

00 RIA-Novosti Infographics. How to Beat the Heat with Ease. 2013

____________________________________

On Thursday, Moscow again expects abnormally hot weather and thunderstorms… according to the weatherman, the temp in the capital will reach a red-hot 32 degrees (90 degrees Fahrenheit). You’ll find tips on how to survive the heat, and what you should pay attention to, and, conversely, hints on what you should avoid to beat the heat in this RIA-Novosti infographic. According to the Phobos Meteorology Centre, the last week of June in Moscow will hit record highs for heat… the temp will warm up to 34+ degrees (93+ degrees Fahrenheit), whilst the weather will be cloudy with brief showers and gusty winds. Doctors advise residents of big cities with public transport that individual units are often not equipped with air conditioning or fans, so, don’t use buses and trolley buses at peak times, if you can avoid it. Wipe a wet handkerchief over exposed areas of the body; wear loose clothes and shoes made of natural materials, and drink water or tea every 15 minutes. If your office isn’t air conditioned, or this unit works so poorly that the space is still muggy, it’s very helpful to read a legal document entitled Hygienic Requirements for the Microclimate of Production Facilities (Гигиенические требования к микроклимату производственных помещений). This lays out the allowable level of temperature in the room, every half a degree higher than the legal limit shortens the workday by an average of one hour.

Serbs Pray For Rain Amidst Raging Fires

______________________________

Several hundred people answered a call by a Serbian Orthodox bishop to pray for rain as wildfires rage in the Balkan country, and forecasts indicate their prayers may be answered. The church prayers in the town of Valjevo in central Serbia were held Sunday after months of record-setting temperatures and unprecedented drought that triggered fires, destroyed crops, and dried out rivers. Emergency measures have been introduced in parts of central Serbia as two Russian firefighting planes tried to extinguish blazes that destroyed hundreds of hectares of forests and threatened some villages. The Serbian government, which asked for Russian help and deployed army troops to fight the fires, held an emergency session Sunday to deal with the disaster. Weather forecasters predict showers for Serbia overnight.

Because of the heat wave, European veterinarians have to come up with more and more ways to encourage animals in urban zoos to drink and stay cool. In their opinion, the animals are just like children… it’s all too easy for them to become bored and listless…
