Kirill and Hilarion Meet in Moscow…

00 Hilarion and Kirill. 01.08.14

The ROCOR official website had this bare-bones post here (and didn’t even give the full report as found on patriarchia.ru, nor did they give you the video link). Will they report this news item? God alone knows…

Bishop {actually, Archimandrite… he’s not a bishop, yet: editor} Ioann Roshchin of Naro-Fominsk, Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, told us that His Holiness Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev, First Hierarch of the Patriarchate of Moscow and all the Russias, and Metropolitan Hilarion Kapral of New York and Eastern America, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), discussed the problems faced by Russian Orthodox clergy abroad in a meeting in Moscow. He said, “We talked about mission, both to our compatriots abroad, and to already-existing parishioners, that is, the people who live abroad, who belong to the Russian Orthodox Church. We covered a range of issues, as our parishes are around the globe on virtually every continent, accordingly, we looked at what we see now and what we need to do to strengthen our witness to the world”.

Bishop Ioann said that the meeting of the First Hierarchs was a working session, but that they made no specific decisions. However, it was important, for “Metropolitan Hilarion and Patriarch Kirill could compare notes on many issues facing Orthodoxy in the world. Different countries of the world have their own particular manifestation of Christianity in general and Russian Orthodoxy in particular. Not all the countries where there are Russian Orthodox parishes are Orthodox or even Christian. Of course, every place has its own complexities, difficulties, and problems in terms of their interaction with the leadership of those countries where they are”.

Of particular concern was the fate of Christianity and Orthodoxy in the Middle East. However, Bishop Ioann noted, “This is always present in conversations between the bishops, as persecution of Christians in the Middle East is a continuing problem. Moreover, both the MP and the ROCOR have ideas on how to influence this situation”. Metropolitan Hilarion arrived in Russia with a pilgrimage group. Vladyki Ioann stated, “A group of parishioners and priests of the ROCOR came to Russia, along with clergy and believers from MP parishes abroad, to visit various dioceses, monasteries, and places of holy relics. Naturally, when Metropolitan Hilarion is in Russia, he always arranges a meeting with Patriarch Kirill, and the Patriarch is always glad to welcome the head of the ROCOR”.

On 30 July 2014, Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow and all the Russias met Metropolitan Hilarion Kapral of New York and Eastern America, the First Hierarch of the ROCOR, at the Patriarchal residence in the Danilov Monastery in Moscow. Also in attendance were Metropolitan Ilarion Alfeyev, the Chairman of the MP Synodal Department for External Church Relations (OVTsS), Archbishop Mark Golovkov of Yegoryevsk, head of the MP Directorate for Foreign Institutions and head of the MP Department for Finance and Economic Management, Archimandrite Ioann Roshchin, Bishop-elect of Naro-Fominsk, and Archpriest Peter Kholodny. During the meeting, Patriarch Kirill and Metropolitan Hilarion discussed Orthodoxy around the world and developed plans for further coördination of missionary work. Patriarch Kirill said, “The most important thing is that our joint efforts help Russian Orthodoxy to develop in all countries where it’s present, given the fact that every year more and more Russian people live in foreign countries”.

8 September 2013. Some Cabinet Input on Why JP Got Exiled to Bethesda

00 listening. 08.09.13

One of the Cabinet told me:

I heard Fatso was getting very popular at the ROCOR parish, so, the regular ROCOR priests got upset… Fatso had his slobbering converts following him around. It’s getting bad… really bad.

In short, if this is true, Potapov got tired of JP and his raggedy entourage mucking up his parish life. Yet, this still raises questions. Did Potapov go straight to Hilarion Kapral, or, did he go through the Centre? Furthermore, was the OCA Holy Synod involved? After all, Potapov IS one of the more-powerful members of the First Families apparat (he inherited Basil Rodzianko’s mana). This is ending like a badly-plotted Mexican soap opera. The guy’s a monkMollard should send him off to a monastery… not in California, not in the South, and not near the District… that would put finis to it all.

ROCOR Rapped “Loose Cannon” Clergy in their Western Rite Parishes

00 Jerome Shaw 02

THIS is why the ROCOR Holy Synod had to act…

At a meeting in New York, the ROCOR Holy Synod took disciplinary action against a bishop who ordained priests in the Western, not the Orthodox, Rite. A ruling of the Synod published on the official ROCOR website stated that the suspension was for Bishop Jerome Shaw’s ordination of new clergy for parishes adhering to the Western Rite, and it censured Bishop Jerome “for his wilfulness” in the supervision of such parishes. Simultaneously, the Synod refused to recognise the ordination of a group of individuals by Bishop Jerome. The Synod relieved Bishop Jerome of all duties, including the post of the vicar for pastoral care of Western Rite parishes, and sent him into retirement. The Synod reminded so-called “Western” parishes of the need for them to follow Orthodox liturgical traditions, even if they maintained, if necessary, some features of the Western Rite.

Commenting on the decision, Archpriest Georgi Roshchin, the representative of the World Russian People’s Council (VRNS) at the UN, explained to Interfax-Religion, “The history of the Western Rite in the Orthodox Church is complex and ambiguous. Originally, it existed amongst communities that converted to Orthodoxy en bloc. In order not to violate the customary course of the liturgical life of whole communities that converted to Orthodoxy, the Church allowed them to keep the liturgical order according to the so-called ‘Roman Rite’. However, along with the preservation of a Western liturgical order, such parishes had to follow the Orthodox Paschalia strictly, and strive in every way over time to bring their liturgical life in accordance with Orthodox canons and traditions”.

In 2011, the ROCOR established a special Vicariate in the USA for such parishes, headed by Bishop Jerome of Manhattan. Fr Georgi said, “Unfortunately, it became apparent that this form of mission didn’t bring the desired results, often, it was an obstacle to believers who adhere to the ancient Orthodox liturgical tradition”. Besides that, he pointed up that the ROCOR isn’t the only group that practised this kind of concession in Orthodoxy. Until now, most of such parishes in the USA were under the omophor of the Local Church of Antioch and all the East. Fr Georgi stated, “However, in the case of the vicariate under the ROCOR, ordained priests were permitted to use Western formularies, that is, these converts perceived the Western Rite not as a vehicle for the confession of Orthodoxy using their familiar liturgical order, but as something self-contained, having a legal right to existence and development within the Orthodox tradition. Naturally, that caused confusion on the part of believers”. Due to this, the ROCOR Holy Synod decided, in his words, “to use a very strict interpretation [of the concession]”. As a result, it removed Bishop Jerome from the post of vicar overseeing parishes of the Western liturgical tradition.

Editor’s Note:

Hilarion Kapral does it again! Firstly, with that bunch of rebellious nuns in Maryland, and, now, with Shaw (and his sidekick Bondi). Hilarion has a definite MO… first, he gives the perp a chance to “fly right”. Then, he gives them another chance. If they still don’t “get the message”, Hilarion acts swiftly and without equivocation. In the case of the dippy nuns (who refused to give up a squffy pseudo-“elder”), he pulled their antimins, in effect, putting them under an interdict. They disobediently went another bishop… no doubt, pleasing Hilarion, for they were no longer his headache, and someone else’s. In this case, he expects the disgrunts to do likewise. In both cases, Hilarion kicked no one out directly… keeping his “white hat” clean. Freddie MG was a truculent little harridan over the nuns… is she going to be likewise over these jabronies? Hilarion should think twice before allowing her to speak at any more parishes…

12 July 2013. Hilarion Kapral Tightens the Leash on the “Western Rite”… Gives Jerome Shaw le Sabot

Read this. One of the Cabinet told me:

This was very interesting. Glad to see the correct decision was made on the Western Rite.

Hmm… Jerome Shaw was a favourite of the Blunder‘s… does this mean that the Blunder is in the doghouse (again)? Nevertheless, Hilarion Kapral “manned up” and “did the right thing”. One of my clerical contacts thinks that the Centre is souring on the konvertsy, especially as they support the West in the Snowden affair. Also note that Dahulich, the most papist-leaning of the OCA bishops, was in Moscow, and no mention was made of it on patriarchia.ru. He didn’t even get a consolation prize like a photo op with the Blunder or the chance to serve with one of the REAL shakers (like Yuvenaly Poyarkov or Varsonofy Sudakov).

This is GOOD news. Perhaps, this will lead to some sanity… for a change. Truly, it’s time for all three “Russian Orthodox” bodies in the USA and Canada to get their shit together and UNITE. Then, we could have some BORING normalcy. I, for one, would applaud that…
