ROCOR Remembers the Guardian of the Miraculous Icon of the Mother of God

________________________

On Saturday, the ROCOR marked the anniversary of the death of José Muñoz-Cortes, the guardian of the miraculous Montréal Iveron Icon of the Mother of God. Hundreds of believers from all over the USA and Canada gathered at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville NY (the ROCOR’s main monastery). Clergy served pannikhida and an akathist at the monastery cemetery in honour of Brother José, murdered 20 years ago in Athens. Believers put dozens of candles that burned for several hours at Brother José’s grave. One of the ROCOR’s main holy objects… the Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God… was present at all the services. Amongst the believers was Angela Muñoz-Cortes, the sister of José Muñoz-Cortes. In an interview with us, she said:

In October 1982, I witnessed how the icon of the Mother of God began to glow in my brother’s house. I saw the miraculous flow from the icon, which happened at night. It woke up José with its strong odour. He didn’t know what it was. José thought that a friend who lived with him at that time used some cologne. Then, he saw the oily stains on the icon and thought that his friend carelessly poured oil on it. José wiped the icon, but soon the spots reappeared, then he realised that it was myrrh. My brother took the icon all over; it became one of the main holy relics of the Russian diaspora for fifteen years. He was very fond of the people that he met in parishes throughout the world. He was open to everyone and tried to help everyone.

José Muñoz-Cortes was a Chilean who converted to Orthodoxy in his youth at the Russian church in Santiago. In 1982, monks on Mount Athos gave him the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, which in a few months began to exude myrrh, and continued to do so regularly for almost fifteen years. Brother José was brutally murdered on 31 October 1997 in Athens, then, the icon disappeared. Presumably, the day before his death, he gave it to friends. Believers believe that the icon returned to Athos. The ROCOR Eastern American Diocese has set up a commission to collect documents for the glorification of Brother José. Ten years after the disappearance of the Montreal icon, in 2007 in Hawaii, a smaller copy, the Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, appeared, which exudes myrrh to this day. Believers believe that in this way the Montréal image returned to them.

9 June 2014. The ROCOR’s OFFICIAL Stance on the Flake Nathanael Kapner

00 Brother Nathanael 01. 09.06.14

This is “Brother Nathanael”… he’s a real flakeozoid… both he and Paffso were at Jordanville yesterday, proving, yet again, that shitbirds of a feather DO flock together…

______________________________

A Cabineteer opined:

The ROCOR issued a statement condemning Nathanael Kapner‘s anti-Semitism; it riled some of the extremist elements. Tough! The Synod’s correct… all anti-Semitic hatred, ALL hate, is anti-Christian. That is, it’s of Antichrist, not Christ!

I did some looking in reputable internet sources (I stayed away from squiffy rightwing and “traditionalist” sources, as should you), and I hit pay-dirt in something from John Sandipoulos (a source eminently quotable and reliable). You may place this in the bank… John’s a good guy and all of my Cabineteers who know him speak highly of him.

******

Though I have never posted anything specifically on Brother Nathanael on this website, I’ve received dozens of emails over the past few years asking about him. I informed people of what I knew about him from those who personally have known him, all of which were very disturbing things. Amongst the things I was informed about and have now been documented online in various sources, is that he is a man with mental problems (pleasant on his medication, although very unpleasant when not) who’s caused enough disturbances in a few monasteries in America so that he was kicked out of all of them, at least once by police. He isn’t and never was a monk. He was a novice in an Old Calendarist monastery in Colorado, but they kicked him out of there too. He claims to be a legitimate monk from a legitimate Orthodox monastery, but this isn’t true. In fact, he’s a showman who likes to be the centre of attention with a persecution complex, although he’s well-off financially after being successful in business. He’s fixated on his Jewish heritage, a sort of love/hate relationship, and obsessed with conspiracy theories that, more often than not, come out as anti-Semitic poisonous rants. He also wears a white skuphos, only reserved for Metropolitans in the Slavic churches, and a pectoral cross, forbidden to novices. In light of these things and his dozens of disturbing videos online, which many Orthodox devour to their own demise, the following official statement by the ROCOR Synod of Bishops is most welcome. May it help lead him and his admirers to repentance.

17 July 2013

Recently, the ROCOR Synod of Bishops received repeated complaints about the activities of and statements made by a certain Nathanael Kapner, who lives on the territory of the Western American Diocese, but has no relation to it. We hereby inform ROCOR clergymen and laity that the Synod of Bishops doesn’t bless the actions of Nathanael Kapner. Profoundly saddened by the state of his soul, we call upon Nathanael Kapner to refrain from posting on the Internet, to a life of repentance of peace in Christ, “where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all” (Epistle of St Paul to the Colossians 3.11).

The ROCOR hasn’t rescinded that ukase and Nathanael hasn’t ceased internet posting. Ergo, his appearance yesterday at Jordanville wasn’t officially-sanctioned… he’s friends with some of the more obscurantist and rigourist monks there… as is Paffhausen! Jerome Shaw was a known protector of both these jabronies… but Shaw’s in the doghouse now. Some priestly intel that I’ve received told me that Kapner’s and JP’s appearances at Jordanville HAD NO OFFICIAL APPROVAL… NONE. Jordanville did this on its own nickel… but it has Potapov’s fingerprints all over it.

Keep this in mind… Potapov and Paffhausen both are heavily involved in extreme rightwing circles in the District that are the worst enemies of the Motherland in the USA. No lie… JP is pals with George Weigel, one of the most violent Uniate-lovers and Orthodox-haters amongst the papists. JP just gave a talk at a stink-tank where Weigel is one of the wheels on the board; so, one can see that JP has dropped none of his satanic Russophobic Republican contacts. The official word that I got is that JP’s petition for release to the ROCOR is going nowhere fast… the Centre doesn’t want this fat Republican Russophobic pig in the ROCOR (there are enough Republican traitors in the ROCOR already, and the Centre doesn’t want or need any more). This is an attempt by the Potapov faction to force the Centre’s hand… but it isn’t working. No one at the Centre is going to admit a Uniate-loving money-grubbing pro-American undisciplined and juvenile lout as a bishop in the ROCOR. The Centre DOES have the last word… and THAT’S the end of the story.

8 June 2014. Paffso and Nathanael Spotted at Jordanville Today… Both Nutters Lionised by Monastery

01 Paffhausen with Isidore Brittain

In case you forgot, this is Paffso with the kiddie porn king Isidore/Stanley Brittain (on the far left) and with Benjamin Peterson (holding certificate), nicked in Nevada for drunk driving. Paffso also consorted with and/or protected the abuser Gleb Podmoshensky, the convicted perv Seraphim Storheim, and the litigation-happy Ray Velencia (Paffso allowed Ray to sue Fr Mike Regan without having a church hearing first, a major no-no)… if shitbirds of a feather flock together…

_______________________________

A few months back, Fr Ambrose of New Zealand and Fr Alexander Lebedeff had a rather public internet tiff over whether the ROCOR had taken in Paffhausen as a bishop. Ambrose said “yea” and Lebedeff said “nay”. I can state that Paffso’s celebrated at Jordanville twice in the last month. I saw him there today, vested, serving… without a doubt it was the Fat One. If that wasn’t all, the infamous Nathanael Kapner was there, too, big as life, circulating amongst the crowd, like he was legit (he’s not). Paffso’s arrogant and dangerous… Nathanael’s a wack at best, a demagogic hater at worst. That bothered me… portions of the monastery have fallen into disrepair since the death of Laurus Škurla, and this just seemed more of the same, but on a spiritual plane. I did some quick enquiries… Paffso isn’t released to the ROCOR… the OCA Holy Synod hasn’t released him. They can’t do so until the Centre gives the green light for the ROCOR to accept him, and Peredelkino hasn’t. Nathanael Kapner isn’t official in the ROCOR… a ROCOR priest kindly sent me this:

A 19 July 2013 statement from the ROCOR Chancery of the Synod of Bishops declared that Kapner has no relation to the ROCOR diocese in which he lives and that his “actions don’t have the blessing of the Synod of Bishops”. The statement further urged him to stop his activity on the internet and to repent. Archbishop Kyrill, the ruling hierarch of the diocese in which Kapner lives, signed the statement.

Why is Jordanville favouring two rather dubious characters? I don’t know yet, neither do any of my clerical, lay, and monastic informants. If Vladyki Kyrill means what he says, then, what happened today in Jordanville should move him to action. I didn’t see Victor Potapov, but that doesn’t mean that he wasn’t there, I’m simply reporting that I didn’t see him there. The Church doesn’t need to get entangled with these two rightwing nutters. We’ll have to see, won’t we?

It’s Christmas for Russian Orthodox Church

Editor’s Note:

This “interview” is softball and a fluff piece (it has First Family fingerprints all over it). I’ll have more to say after you read this treacly missive. After all, I live in Albany NY, and Colonie NY is one of its nearest suburbs (the parish is a 15 minute drive from downtown Albany near Broadway hill on a Sunday, a bit longer on weekdays). Take some of this jabronie’s comments with a heavy dose of scepticism and a BIG block of salt…

The Rev Alexis Duncan, priest at Church of Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God Russian Orthodox Church in Colonie NY., was born and raised in Virginia in a Russian Orthodox family. Graduated from Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary in Jordanville NY, in Herkimer County, where he met Anna, his wife of 23 years. They live in Voorheesville NY.

Jennifer Patterson

You recently moved back to the Northeast. What brought you here?

Alexis Duncan

There was a need here at the church. I came from Atlanta in September after serving there as priest for 16 years. I’ve known a lot of the parishioners in Albany for many years since my time at seminary. Fr Wsevolod Drobot at the church on Sand Creek Road was getting older and recently retired as parish priest after 50 years. Of course, it’s been a bit of an adjustment… especially the weather. This is the first snow I’ve seen in some time. My wife and I had to go out and buy snow tires and boots.

Jennifer Patterson

Your church is Russian Orthodox. Does everyone in the congregation have that ethnic background?

Alexis Duncan

Our membership is probably about one-third Russian, those who immigrated before World War II; one-third new immigrants just here from Russia; and one-third American, those who have converted or married into the Orthodox Church. It’s a pretty nice balance of different peoples. There are regularly 100 or more worshipers on Sunday mornings, but we see many more on Easter and Christmas. We’re not a large parish in the sense of megachurches, but for an Orthodox parish, we’re average in size.

Jennifer Patterson

What makes a church Orthodox?

Alexis Duncan

The Orthodox Church is very traditional and has preserved, without deviation, the traditions and doctrines of the early Christian Church established by the apostles. We don’t believe that over time Christian theology or basic worship can change, or that morality changes when society does.

Jennifer Patterson

In keeping with tradition, you celebrate Christmas in January. Why is that?

Alexis Duncan

In the 4th century, the First Ecumenical Council determined to follow the Julian calendar, named for Julius Caesar. Most of Europe followed this calendar until the 18th century… our founding fathers were born under it. The Christian Church followed this calendar for a sense of unity. Pope Gregory XIII ordered the calendar to be advanced by 10 days in the 16th century, which became known as the Gregorian calendar. Most Orthodox churches, with the exception of some Greek Orthodox churches, still follow the Julian calendar and our Christmas, or Feast of the Nativity, is celebrated in January. It really is a matter of faith.

Jennifer Patterson

Tell us how you’ll be celebrating the holiday.

Alexis Duncan

Our “old calendar” services are in English and Church Slavonic, the liturgical language of the Russian Orthodox Church. We’ll have a vigil on Sunday evening, our Christmas Eve, in preparation for the Feast of the Nativity on Monday, our Christmas. We’ll have Mass at 09.30. We have 12 great feasts throughout the year, but this service is one of the most major and anticipated.

Editor’s Afterword:

Liar, liar, pants on fire! Firstly, Rev Duncan doesn’t inform Ms Patterson that there are TWO other priests attached to this dinky establishment, which has always functioned as a podvorie of Jordanville (ROCOR priests have said of the Albany bunch, “They’re rather unique; they have their own ways”, not in a good sense); Drobot was a reliable First Family apparatchik (he was “President of the Presbyteral Senate”, a suitably Ruritanian title for a Grand Fenwickian situation, he lived at Jordanville, some 115 klicks (70 miles) away from the Albany parish). In short, Duncan’s presence was NOT a necessity due to the presence of two other clergymen onsite. Duncan doesn’t even mention them! What a maroon! He didn’t say, “My colleagues in ministry here are Frs X and Y, they’ve been here much longer than I’ve been, and I intend to learn much from them”. That’s what a humble man would’ve said. No… they don’t even rate a mention; they don’t even get sloppy seconds. There’s no pressing pastoral need for this jabronie to be present at all. It smells as if he was sent for to be the chaplain to the Fedoroff clan, who think that they run this parish. Indeed, the location (in wetland not truly suitable for construction, it added unneeded expense to the construction costs) was chosen because it was close to the residence of the Fedoroff clan’s matriarch.

Secondly, he’s not getting 100 people a Sunday at liturgy. His proportions are correct, but he’s wrong in one of the details. There really aren’t any First Wave émigré families or po-nashemu Karpatsky people at this parish… when I attended it (when it was in Schenectady NY), it was mostly post-World II Second Wave DPs and their families; they had amazingly-nutters Far Right politics (many smelt like ROA/KONR Nazi collaborators; they’d say things such as, “Hitler was a friend of the church”). What my sources tell me is that “attendance is double that of 1990s levels”… that was 30 people a Sunday (with three priests usually present!), so, all things being equal, they’re getting 60 people a Sunday now. He’s bloviating, and the reporter just eats it up, as she knows nothing about the parish. In any case, the building isn’t big, it looks bigger than it is, as it’s built on a slab, so, the furnace and other utility items are behind the altar area, not in the basement. Only some 40 percent of the floor area is in the nave, and it’d be a squeeze to fit over a hundred laypeople in it. For less than a hundred people, they have three priests and two deacons on a given Sunday… that’s ludicrous.

In short, this situation is typical First Family smoke n’ mirrors. Drobot was a typical example of that scurvy breed. In 1991, after the August events, he “hid out” and refused to comment on the new situation for a few weeks until he got the new party-line from Jordanville and Vitaly Ustinov. Then, he was gung-ho for the ROCOR parishes in Russia, and ranted, “The communists are still in charge, nothing has changed!” Hmm… this Duncan guy says that he’s from Virginia… there’s a Duncan family tied in with the Rodzianko clan… he might be part of that lot. There’s a LOT more here than what the ignorant TU reporter could see. Nevertheless, she’s blameless; what does she know of Russian Orthodoxy in the USA? All the same, Duncan gave her the Big Green Weenie and the glad hand… and she fell for it. Kids… there are two other priests serving this parish… there’s no need for this guy… unless Jordanville isn’t sure of the parish’s loyalty to it (the New Russians are all probably pro-MP, along with some of the older parishioners, which means that they’re not beholden to Roman Krassovsky and his Jordanville gang).

It’s the usual simmering stew, isn’t it? We’ll have to see what happens after Hilarion Kapral’s death (nothing will change until then for this local candy store)… Jordanville has no real candidate to replace him, and the Centre seems to want Mark Golovkov for the ROCOR white hat. Will Jordanville pull a HOCNA in that event (as one ROCOR priest told me, “They’ve degenerated into a minor Ukrainian skete”)? Time will tell us, no? Remember, always search “for the rest of the story”… you’ll never be bored, trust me.
