Toktogon Altybasarova, a kolkhoznitsa* who became a substitute mom for 150 orphans from the siege of Leningrad, died in Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev expressed condolences to her family and friends, writing, “During the Great Patriotic War, Toktogonov Altybasarova mothered 150 children from besieged Leningrad. Although she was only 16-years-old, she surrounded these children with care and attention, conveying to them a sense of intimacy and warmth. In doing so, Toktogonov took their mothers’ places”. She was only 16-years-old when she helped the new arrivals from Piter in Issyk-Kul Oblast. After the war, her kids dispersed throughout the country. In addition to these foster children, with her VOV vet husband, she raised eight of her own, having 23 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Altybasarova’s funeral and burial was in her native village of Kurmenty in Issyk-Kul Oblast.

The local selsoviet* appointed her the caregiver of the children from Piter… she carried out this duty admirably and without fault. These were the sort of people who made up the USSR! The American “conservatives” and neoliberals lie in virtually everything that they tell you about the Soviet reality and legacy. Altybasarova incarnated the sort of selfless loving people for whom God spares us from our deserved punishment. Yes… there are decent caring people out there, and they do touch hundreds of lives for the good… but they’re unknown, unlike the uncaring grasping bastards who hog the headlines. I have no doubt that Toktogon Altybasarova touched many lives. The world is a better place for people like this. I bow low before her memory. Light a candle this Sunday in her memory… remember, you can light a candle for anyone… we’re Christians, that’s what we do.
