Yolkin has Indian Summer as a grandma because “Indian Summer” in Russian is бабье лето (babye leto), literally, “Grandma’s Summer”. If Yolkin were dealing with an English text, he’d probably use an American Indian with a feather bonnet… it’s one of those idiomatic language things.

The guy in the apartment is wearing slippers because Russians consider wearing your street shoes in the house as being бескултурний (beskulturny: “uncultured”, uncouth, “below the salt”, “simply not done”). As one Russian gal said, “Do you want your baby crawling on the same floor that you’ve clomped on in your dirty old shoes? Yuck!” By the way, French Canadians have a similar custom…

There’s an untranslatable play on words in the title, it can also be rendered, “I know what you’re up to, ‘Old Grandma’”. The image is a play on the Russian usage бабьим летом (babym letom), which literally means “Grandma’s Summer”. If he were dealing with the English, no doubt, he’d use an Indian, not a grandma. It’s one of those idiomatic things…
