If Only the Weather Forecasters are Right!

Yolkin has Indian Summer as a grandma because “Indian Summer” in Russian is бабье лето (babye leto), literally, “Grandma’s Summer”. If Yolkin were dealing with an English text, he’d probably use an American Indian with a feather bonnet… it’s one of those idiomatic language things.
The guy in the apartment is wearing slippers because Russians consider wearing your street shoes in the house as being бескултурний (beskulturny: “uncultured”, uncouth, “below the salt”, “simply not done”). As one Russian gal said, “Do you want your baby crawling on the same floor that you’ve clomped on in your dirty old shoes? Yuck!” By the way, French Canadians have a similar custom…

Forecasters predict light rains and warming up to 16 degrees (61 degrees Fahrenheit) in Moscow this week. Sergei Yolkin thinks that the above scene is likely.

Here are the difficulties of the week as Sergei Yolkin saw them… a possible increase in fees for divorce, Iran after Ahmadinejad, and, of course, the almost complete absence of Indian summer.
