Zyuganov Pledges Pardon for Khodorkovsky If Elected President… Pledges New Gosduma Elections If He Wins Presidential Election

Gennady Zyuganov (1944- ), Head of the KPRF Faction in the RF Gosduma and Chairman of the KPRF

______________________________

On Wednesday, Gennady Zyuganov, the Chairman of the KPRF, said that he’d pardon former Yukos head Mikhail Khodorkovsky if elected president. Khodorkovsky, once seen as a potential threat to Putin, has been in jail on charges of fraud and tax evasion since 2003. His eight-year jail term has received a five-year extension, and he’s currently due for release in 2016. Zyuganov told reporters, “I think we should show humanity and mercy. Khodorkovsky has already served quite a long term”. He said that we should review the results of the “illegal and criminal” privatisation of the 1990s and that we should punish those found guilty of economic crimes in accordance with the term served by Khodorkovsky. “We’ve uncovered about 50,000 crimes. By considering all those cases we would be able to make a decision, by which everyone would get what they deserve with a reference to the term served by Khodorkovsky,” Zyuganov said.

Zyuganov, who’ll announce his campaign platform on Saturday, also said that he’d amend the constitution to permit only two five-year presidential terms. Andrei Klychkov, a senior KPRF official, said that the Communists have prepared an extensive reform of Russia’s political system, including limiting presidential powers, reinstating direct elections for governor, increasing the presidential campaign period, and making political debates obligatory for all candidates.

KPRF Chairman Gennady Zyuganov promised to re-run this month’s disputed parliamentary elections if elected president. On Saturday, Zyuganov told supporters, after winning formal nomination to run for president in next March’s election, “If the KPRF wins the presidential election, we guarantee that we’ll hold early new elections to the RF Gosduma in December 2012”. Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), and tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov are also standing for election in the March poll, as is Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Other candidacies include Dmitri Mezentsev, governor of eastern Siberia’s Irkutsk Oblast, and radical opposition figure Eduard Limonov.

Zyuganov described the 4 December election as the “dirtiest” since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The election saw Putin’s ruling United Russia Party just maintain its parliamentary majority amid widespread allegations of fraud and coercion of voters. Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said the vote was “slanted in favour of the ruling party”. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the election was neither free nor fair {like the “free” elections amongst the Good Ol’ Boy cronies in Arkansas, Hill? What about “Landslide Lyndon?”: editor}, and the European Parliament called for a re-run. During a visit to Brussels on Thursday, President Dmitri Medvedev maintained the election was fair and said the European Parliament had “nothing to do” with it. Speaking during a KPRF Congress in Moscow, Zyuganov also invited Putin to a televised election debate.

Editor’s Note:

It’s interesting to note the two-pronged nature of Zyuganov’s proposal… yes, we should spring Khodorkovsky from the slam (for he’s “done his time”), but all the other oligarchs deserve eight-year sentences in the hoosegow for their economic crimes. If the commies were to win, they’d free Khodorkovsky, but they’d also stuff him on the first jet to the West, wash their hands of him, and say, “Good riddance to bad rubbish”. Khodorkovsky’s salted away some of his ill-gotten gains in Swiss bank accounts… he won’t starve. In any case, the Western media, governments, and élite will kiss Khodorkovsky’s naked arse in public. That’s what they do with all the rich, don’t they?

Now if we were to take Zyuganov’s suggestion and apply to our own banksters, corrupt pols, corporate thieves, and media shills, we’d have to round up Mitt Romney, Rush Limbaugh, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain (remember Herman?), Sarah Palin, and John Huntsman and slap prison orange on the lot of ‘em… we’d have to release all the honest crack dealers to find room for all the McMansion dwellers, wouldn’t we? It ain’t gonna happen… in the West, at present, “money talks and bullshit walks”… and it carries a loudhailer made in China, dontcha know…
