“Americans Aren’t Always on the Wrong Side of History”

On Memorial Day, it’s important to remember the tragedy of working-class people dying in rich men’s wars. We should strive for a world without war, profits, and empire. However, let’s not forget that during the Civil War (Second American Revolution) and the Second World War (Global People’s Anti-Fascist War) the USA was on the right side, standing against the forces of darkness, slavery, fascism, and reaction. One can argue that mistakes and opportunism took place during these wars, but remember that Americans aren’t always on the wrong side of history. There’s a progressive, democratic, peace-loving, and revolutionary spirit buried deep within the American people, and I’m confident that it’ll soon reawaken in these tough times.

The late great Jeff Smith does Shit on a Shingle (the first four minutes)… I remember him from the 80s and 90s… yes, I know all about him… it’s about cooking, kids…

If you served in the American forces, you know about SOS… Shit On a Shingle… creamed chipped/ground beef or sausage on toast. GOOD EATS, KIDS, I KID YOU NOT. Look here, here, and here for how to make it. There’s a Navy/USMC way and an Army/Air Force way to make it. The Army way is with ground beef/bulk sausage (the USAF came out of the Army, so it uses “Army-style” SOS); the Navy way is with chipped beef (as the USMC is under the Department of the Navy, they use “Navy-style” SOS). Of course, if you want to serve it real chow-line style, you put two pieces of buttered toast on your plate, ladle the SOS over it, and put two over-easy fried eggs on top of that, with a cuppa red-hot Joe on the side. Hey, all you old-school vets… this is the BOMB. I don’t have it as often as I should. Did you mess-cook? If you know what I’m talkin’ about, you’re a real Navy vet (mess-cooking is what they call KP in the Navy).

This is a GOOD service memory for Memorial Day…

25 May 2015. A Point to Ponder This Memorial Day… Honour the Heroes… Ridicule the Cowards… It’s Only Fair

Honour the heroes this Memorial Day. Why are so many of them homeless? Why are so many of them poor? Why did do many of the Affluent Effluent dodge service and yet reap all the benefits? Yes, here’s a partial list of those loudmouth GOP Chickenhawk warpigs in the Hall of Shame:

• Patrick Buchanan
• Antonin Scalia
• Ted Nugent
• Willy Romney
• Paul Ryan
• Rand Paul
• Richard Cheney
• Ted Cruz
• Marco Rubio
• Rush Limbaugh
• Rod Dreher

and many, many, many more. In fact, the more strident one is for war, the more probable it is that they never served. All sane combat vets of my acquaintance aren’t anxious to repeat the experience. In fact, most don’t talk about it, unlike the REMFs (Rear Echelon MotherFuckers), who’re prolix and dominate most veterans’ organisations.

Honour our war dead. Vote for Bernie…

28 May 2014. St T’s on Memorial Day… It Was a Nice Day

This was the outdoor liturgy at the St T’s Memorial Day Pilgrimage on Monday. The pic doesn’t do justice to how many people are there… many are out of the shot, being to the right of the pavilion. It’s not as many as there was in the 80s, but that’s the trend now, but its been stable for the last few years. St T’s has been around since 1905… it’s the oldest Orthodox monastery in the USA. A lot of the Russian Orthodox people in the Northeastern USA show up and there’s as much socialising as there’s worship. Sometimes, it seems like half of NEPA‘s there.
