Sergei Galinichenko, owner of an aviary with 400 parrots (25 different species, including rare specimens… Grey, Blue-Fronted Amazon, Senegalese, Congolese, Alexandria, and Rosella) in Lugansk, told us that the war adversely affected his birds; the battles of last summer continue to have an impact on them:

The explosions and upset very strongly influenced the behaviour of my parrots, 85 to 90 percent of the birds that hatched eggs, ceased to care for them. The stress caused the parrots to stop feeding the fledglings, so, eventually, the young birds died. It also happened that adult birds refused to feed. This year, the situation began to improve, the smaller birds have calmed down, as everything is normal, but the larger parrots aren’t fully up to par, but with time, that’ll happen. Not only is there local demand for these birds, but also from Russia. I have potential buyers from Russia, but because of difficulties at the customs office (he needs a large package of documents to send the birds) I can’t do it yet. I hope that soon everything will work out.

On Thursday, Swiss customs authorities said that they’d arrested a bird specialist who smuggled the eggs of protected parrots in his underwear and travelled the globe trading in rare species. In a statement, the customs service said that they thought that the man, whom it didn’t identify, had trafficked over 150 eggs from endangered parrots protected by international law, as well as rare pheasant species. They busted the man, a Swiss citizen who was also a legal bird trader, at Zürich Kloten Airport in 2010 with 25 eggs hidden in his underwear as he returned from Brazil. The customs service explained that it was only now revealing details of the case because of the secrecy surrounding the probe. Investigators managed to establish that, thanks to a solid international network of contacts, the man managed to smuggle more than 150 eggs to buyers in Indonesia, Thailand, and Mexico. The total value of the contraband eggs was 65,000 Swiss Francs (2.3 million Roubles. 72,000 USD. 74,000 CAD. 75,000 AUD. 53,000 Euros. 45,000 UK Pounds), adding that it wasn’t possible to establish where they came from. Investigators said that the man also had an aviary of several hundred birds, including endangered species. The Swiss veterinary service also seized seven rare parrots from an accomplice, with an estimated value of 8,000 Swiss Francs (283,000 Roubles. 8,900 USD. 9,100 CAD. 9,200 AUD. 6,500 Euros. 5,500 UK Pounds). The two men face heavy fines for trafficking in endangered species.

Chuck has lived with a friend for eleven years, ever since he was a chick. “He’s truly smarter than a lot of people. In fact, his intelligence is scary at times”. The last image is a little lost polar bear in Chukotka… we use it for wallpaper on our desktop… Nicky loves him.

It’s been a while since my last “Little Brothers” post… it’s time to get back into the habit of doing it, at least weekly… it’s fun. However, I’m no PETA nutter. Hunters and fishermen are the best! They’re the people with the greatest respect for animals that I know… as one said to me, “You only kill what you can use… God will get even with you if you kill for funsies”. Another friend, a farmer, said, “Pests gotta go, but if they stay off my land, I don’t go looking for them. If I shoot a groundhog, though, it goes in the pot, and its good eating, let me tell you”.
