Wanna get rid of that cold? Do one or all of these:

  • Breathe deeply over a steaming-hot pot of boiling potatoes
  • Eat raw garlic and onions
  • Go to bed, cover yourself with an electric blanket set on high (this is the 21st century, after all), and snuggle up with the cat
  • Shake some black pepper into a shot of vodka and power it down

Now, don’t bother me with this-or-that scientific study… Baba KNOWS… that does end the discussion…

26 November 2015. Happy Thanksgiving From Us to You

00 dozhinki belarus 261115

Dozhinki (Harvest Thanksgiving) celebration in Belarus

______________________________

Today is American Thanksgiving… the rest of the world already had Thanksgiving… usually, it occurs around the Harvest (as it does in Canada, occurring in October). That’s so that events can take place outdoors; people set up tables in the yard and feast outside. It’s a festival of thanks for the harvest, so people take the first-fruits to the church for blessing (and distribution to the poor afterwards). Thanksgiving didn’t begin with the English Puritans… it’s an ancient and venerable holiday, known to all peoples.

Have a wonderful day with your family and friends…

22 September 2014. The “Quiet Hunt”… That be “Mushrooming” for Them Not in the Know…

Mushrooming in Ivanovo Oblast

______________________________

Russians are PASSIONATE about mushrooms… we love ’em! No, we LOVE ‘EM! Any which way we can get ’em, and any which way you care to prepare ’em, most Russians are the head of the queue when it comes to mushroom appreciation. If you go mushrooming, ya gotta wear yer grubbies and your rubber wellies… no two ways about it! Use a wicker basket to carry your prizes… if you use plastic bags, they turn into undifferentiated goo. This is the most popular “hunt” in Russia, hands down… them griby be Good Eats…
