D V Pushilin, Vice-Chairman of the DNR Peoples Soviet, and head of the DNR delegation to the Minsk talks, told us in comments on a proposal put forward by Polish President Andrzej Duda, “Increasing the number of countries participating in the Minsk in process seeking a peaceful settlement in the Donbas would only aggravate the situation, so, we’d block any such proposal. Even now, the parties to the negotiations often fail to reach a consensus. As a result, the Minsk format will likely carry on until 2016. If we accept the idea of including additional players in the process, negotiations could end in frozen gridlock, with no solution of any of the existing problems”.
As reported by the media today, Duda suggested a new format of talks to settle the Donbass conflict to junta strongman P A Poroshenko, adding major European states and neighbouring countries, including Poland, to the participating parties. Pushilin noted, “This wasn’t the first time that the USA and its client states tried to interfere in the negotiations, particularly in the ‘Normandy format’. This isn’t really Poland’s position; the USA pressured them… that’s how I take Duda’s statement. Unfortunately, I don’t think that most European leaders really want to resolve the Donbass conflict”.
Talks took place in Minsk under the aegis of the Contact Group, with the Russian Federation, the OSCE, the DNR, the LNR, and the Ukraine participating. Further talks in Minsk shall take place on 26 August. The Contact Group of Germany, France, and Russia guarantee any progress made in talks with the Ukrainian side under the format of the “Normandy Quartet”.
