On Saturday, a high-ranking naval source told us that Northern Fleet anti-submarine forces detected and chased an intruding US submarine from Russian territorial waters, saying, “On 7 August 2014, patrol forces of the Northern Fleet detected a foreign submarine, presumably, a US Navy Virginia-class boat, in the Barents Sea. We sent anti-submarine ships, as well as an Il-38 ASW aircraft, to the area to search for it and track it down”. Russian forces chased the submarine out of Russian waters after a 27-minute contact. Our source said, “This is far from being an isolated incident, we’ve found foreign submarines in the Barents Sea lately. NATO submarines cause serious navigational incidents many times”. In 1992, the USS Baton Rouge collided with the Northern Fleet submarine K-276 Krab in Kolsky Bay. In 1986, the submarine HMS Splendid collided with a Northern Fleet PL Project 941 Akula SSBN.

On Tuesday, Frantz Klintsevich, deputy head of the RF Gosduma Defence Committee said that a memorial commemorating Soviet soldiers who died in conflicts around the world during the Cold War era will be built in Victory Park (Park Pobedy) in Moscow. The memorial will form an architectural ensemble around an existing monument honouring Soviet soldiers who died during the Soviet war in Afghanistan (1979-89). He said, “It’ll be a beautiful composition with sculptures and bas-reliefs depicting certain historical events”. Stone tablets with the names of about 10,000 Soviet soldiers who fell in hotspots all over the world will line the alley leading to the memorial. Klintsevich said that plans call for completing the monument by summer, noting, “We’ll start preliminary excavation in the near future, probably in March. We’ve already begun engraving the names on the memorial tablets”. According to official statistics, the USSR was in over 30 conflicts in some 29 countries; besides Afghanistan, Soviet troops fought in Angola (and here), Ethiopia, Yemen, and Nigeria. Some 15,000 Soviet troops died in Afghanistan alone, before the Soviet withdrawal in February 1989.

Note what’s claimed… a Russian nuclear sub was patrolling in the Gulf of Mexico undetected for more than a month. If no one detected it, well, how can we be sure that it was there for a month? It may have been there just for a day, or a week, or for six weeks… if no one detected it, how can we know how long that it was there? Besides, if the sub went undetected, how could we even know that this notional ship was even there? That’s Fallacy Number One.

I’d observe that Mr Cornyn has no private means to find out how long the Russian sub was near the American coast. How does he know how long that it was there? Cornyn belongs in the slam for publicising classified naval intel (for sub spottings are indeed such).
