Citing sources in Kiev, Kommersant reported that the Ukraine might halt passenger train service to Russia from 1 July. According to a Ukrainian government source, the excuse for this would be RZD‘s reluctance “to stop passenger transportation to Russia from the ATO zone and, in particular, from Donetsk, which violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Ukraine”. At present, elektrichka* service exists between Donetsk and Taganrog. Kommersant learned from Ukrzaliznitsya (State Administration of Railway Transport):
There’s no decision on this matter now.
In turn, RZD told Kommersant:
We didn’t receive any documents from Kiev on terminating passenger traffic.
Kommersant noted:
Neither Kiev or Moscow would officially confirm plans to suspend passenger rail service, however, Ukrainian interlocutors insisted that Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council (SNBOU) Secretary A V Turchinov and Verkhovnaya Rada Ukrainy Chairman A V Paruby “actively lobby” such a decision. Ukrainian President P A Poroshenko increasingly supports their hardline viewpoints.

Today, DNR Chairman of the Government A V Zakharchenko greeted railway workers on their professional holiday, “You showed true heroism in the war, daily showing a high degree of organization and responsibility. Despite constant bombing and shelling, all our drivers, dispatchers, and railway workers carried on with their appointed work. Thanks to the work of our railway staff, the Republic always received on-time delivery of valuable cargoes needed to maintain our economy’s stability and to construct our new state. Thanks to your work, we have a cohesive and smoothly functioning railway system. I express my confidence that the work and experience of all railwaymen will continue to make a great contribution to the development and prosperity of the Donbass. I warmly greet all those whose life-work is tied up with the railway, I wish you and your loved ones good health, prosperity, happiness, and a happy day!” Chairman Zakharchenko re-established Railway Day in the DNR on the first Sunday of August, as it was in Soviet times, and still is in Russia. He posted a decree to that effect on the official DNR government website on 20 July 2015. The purpose of the celebration is to “note the first-rate contribution of rail transport workers to the restoration and maintenance of the DNR railway infrastructure”.
