Do You Want to Know HOW Stupid Republicans Are? Homer Simpson TSA Goons Arrested Guy for “Arabic Flash Cards”… D’oh!

Nick George was a student flying from Philadelphia to start his senior year of college in California. However, when a TSA operative found his Arabic language flash cards, they arrested the 21-year-old. He sued and his five-year ordeal is now ending. TSA agents also found a book critical of George W Bush’s foreign policy he was carrying to be worthy of greater scrutiny. Rogue Nation was by former Reagan Administration Commerce Secretary Clyde Prestowitz and widely read in the USA.

George planned to get a jump on his Arabic class by reviewing some vocabulary. When he emptied his pockets at the security checkpoint, he pulled out the stack of flashcards. An agent inspected them. George wrote on the ACLU website (which helped George in his lawsuit), “One of them started rifling through the cards, and another took the book out of my carry-on. The minutes ticked by, and I got more confused about why I was being detained and more concerned that I’d miss my flight. One of them called a supervisor”. The supervisor took a half-hour to arrive. When she asked, “Do you know who did 9/11?” “Taken totally aback, I answered, ‘Osama Bin Laden’”. Then, the supervisor asked if George knew what language Osama Bin Laden spoke. He replied, “Arabic”. She responded, “So, do you see why these cards are suspicious?”

George later wrote, “Imagine going from being in-line at the airport to having a TSA supervisor imply you had some connection with the worst act of terrorism ever committed against your country… all over the course of a few minutes”. Then, a Philadelphia cop showed up. George recounted, “He cuffed my hands, grabbed my arms, and, in full view of the rest of the passengers, walked me through the entire Philadelphia airport and into the police substation”. The cops held him handcuffed in a cell for several hours, long having missed his connecting flight. Police never informed him of his rights or gave him a specific charge.

George says he hopes the settlement this week will make these “arbitrary arrests” outdated by requiring the Philadelphia police department to train cops to find probable cause before making an arrest. In short, they can’t arrest someone for studying Arabic or reading a book. George said, “It should go without saying that this is perfectly innocuous First Amendment-protected activity. I hope the Philadelphia police got the message”. The city also settled for 25,000 USD (1.6 million Roubles. 156,000 Renminbi. 1.54 million INR. 31,000 CAD. 31,600 AUD. 22,300 Euros. 16,700 UK Pounds) in damages.

The Department of Homeland Insecurity often attracts an unhinged rightwing lot, especially, Mormons and the woollier sort of Cuban-American. One of my friends has the family name “George”… she’s Syrian by descent… gee, perhaps Nick George was Syrian or Lebanese (I know of four families in Toledo with the name “George”… it’s a COMMON Christian Arab surname)… so, these Einstein TSA goons thought that he was a “terrorist”. Hey, he “looked Arabic”… we all know that all of those “ragheads” are terrorists! Rush and Sarah say so! This is the result of Republican hate speech spewed by rightwing pundits over the years. Anyone who attends to such shit-spewers makes Homer Simpson look like a rocket scientist. That’s that…

Here’s proof that there’s freedom of speech in Russia (perhaps, more so than in the politically-correct USA). Let those with eyes see the truth of the matter!

Editor’s Note:

Most of the repressive measures (TSA, PRISM, Guantánamo, and “extreme rendition” anyone?) in the USA came in after 9/11, at the hands of the “conservative” Bush administration. Bush was about as “conservative” as Adolf Hitler was (and favoured the Affluent Effluent just as blatantly)… and both of them waged aggressive war in foreign parts. Fancy that…

Look at Yolkin; then, look at the CNN/Fox News duopoly (they’re NOT polar opposites… they’re two sides of the same debased and corroded coin). I rest my case…

Putin Proposes Visa-Free Entry for International Athletes

______________________________

This summer, Russia will host the World University Games, in 2014, the Winter Olympics, and in 2018, the FIFA World Cup. In the coming five years, it’ll also play host to a number of world championships in individual sports. To make Russia more welcoming, President Putin proposed to grant visa-free entry to foreign athletes participating in these competitions. Mr Nikolai Dolgopolov, President of the Russian Federation of Sports Journalists, said, “The news makes me happy. All this paperwork and biometrics are so time-consuming and tedious! As a great sports fan, President Putin appreciates the importance of easy entry for international athletes. Russia’s getting a better image, and its consular officials, an easier workload”.

Remember, in 2008, Russia granted visa-free entry to some 60,000 Chelsea FC supporters who came to Moscow to watch the final match of the Champions League played between their team and Manchester United FC. Will the EU respond to such Russian measures by bringing forward visa-free travel between EU countries and Russia? We asked Dr Sergei Utkin of the Europe Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences about this, and he said, “Such expectations are unrealistic. True, we have a dialogue. At the same time, the EU countries would have difficulties in finding a common response to the latest easy-visas initiative by the Russian President. Coming to an agreement within the EU is a protracted and difficult matter”. In some of its recent pronouncements, the European Commission said it isn’t in a hurry to bring about visa-free travel between EU countries and Russia.

Editor’s Note:

One reason why the EU is dragging its feet is American pressure. In particular, the US Republican Party supports repressive police state measures that restricts the travel of American citizens abroad. For instance, the Bush fascists destroyed the most peaceful border in the world when it demanded that all Americans travelling to Canada must have passports. I travelled to Canada many times without a passport… that’s no longer possible due to the Department of Homeland Security Gestapo created by the Republican Party. There’s no threat of “terrorism” from Canada. Reflect on this… the Republicans claim that they want “smaller” government… well, they don’t want to dismantle such GOP-founded “American KGB” agencies as the Department of Homeland Security and the TSA (I had contact with the latter… they’re a Kafkaesque and Queen of Hearts madhouse). I think that makes them liars, no? Read and heed…

8 December 2011. None Dare Call it “Oppression”…

“STOP! We’ve got to take away your freedom to travel in order to keep you safe. You didn’t want to go there, anyway… so sorry”. If you vote Republican, that’s what you vote for…

______________________________

Firstly, for the oppression… read this. The TSA was founded and had its foundational years under the paranoid Republican junta of George  Bush (as for legitimacy, “hanging chads”, anyone?). Barack Obama’s fault lies solely in not abolishing this useless and unnecessary “law enforcement agency“. Any of its REAL tasks could be handled by existing bodies with far less invasiveness and ham-handed bungling (that’s the unanimous opinion of the four cops that I asked via e-mail on the subject). As barriers to travel are going down, as passports are increasingly a thing of the past, Bush the Lesser swam against the tide that’s embodied in the Schengen Agreement. At the Canadian border, the agents wear bullet-proof vests and demand passports of ordinary citizens. That’s a TRAVESTY.

The Canadian border was once the “longest undefended border” in the world. Americans and Canadians could visit each other’s countries freely with no hassle. Bush changed all that (EEK! People might find out that Socialism works! OH… the humanity!)… and Barack Obama didn’t have the stones to rescind Bush’s Folly. There’s NO reason for it at all. The RCMP knows what it’s about… and they have the “terrorist situation” in Canada well in hand. We should abolish BOTH the TSA and the requirement for passports for travel to Canada… they’re completely unrelated to real National Security… they’re crude Gestapo-like manifestations of the Republican Party’s true colours. You can honour the senescent dribbling of Slobberin’ Ronnie or you can honour a true human being like the late Jack Layton. I KNOW where I stand!
