26 August 2017. Mild Summer with Plenty of Rain in Upstate NY… The Plants are Having a Big-Time Party!

________________________

This has been a mild summer here in upstate New York. The temps have been around 25 to 30, with no real scorchers and the humidity levels were never muggy. We didn’t even turn on the air conditioner! There’s been plenty of rain, so the plants are lush n’ green. They’re having a big-time plant party! It’s great times if you’re a flower or a tree. You wonder if the backyard gardeners are going to have a bumper crop of zukes, cukes, and tomaters. The bees are havin’ a great time, too… with all those flowers in splendour and happiness, you know that the hives will be FULL of ass-kickin’ honey. The Farmer’s Almanac predicts a mild winter, too… they were right about the weather last year, so, God willing, one hopes that they’re right again. It’s been a GOOD year, weather-wise, so far…

What’s happened to those damned cold old school Russian winters? Cheborneck!

Weather in Moscow is about to break one more record, as the air temp may warm up to 9 degrees (48.2 degrees Fahrenheit) Sunday afternoon, outdoing the previous record of 7.2 degrees (45 degrees Fahrenheit) set in 1995. The Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environment Monitoring (Rosgidromet) said that they expect the skies in the city and in the Podmoskovye to be partly cloudy, and they expect no atmospheric precipitation (that’s weatherman talk for “we don’t think that it’s gonna rain”). Rosgidromet also spoke of a mild northwest wind of 3 metres/second (6.7 miles per hour) to 8 metres/second (18 miles per hour). They expect this kind of weather to last through Monday, with pre-dawn temperatures varying from -4 degrees (24.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in the rural areas to 1 degree (33.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in the city. In the afternoon, the temp is likely to rise to 8 (46.4 degrees Fahrenheit) to 10 degrees (50 degrees Fahrenheit), and even 11 degrees (51.8 degrees Fahrenheit), in some parts of the region. The weather might repeat the record for 10 March, set in 1997, which was 10.2 degrees (50.5 degrees Fahrenheit). On 8 March, Gidromet’s main monitoring station at the all-Russia Exhibition Centre recorded 8.1 degrees (46.6 degrees Fahrenheit), which was also a record reading.

Yolkin has Indian Summer as a grandma because “Indian Summer” in Russian is бабье лето (babye leto), literally, “Grandma’s Summer”. If Yolkin were dealing with an English text, he’d probably use an American Indian with a feather bonnet… it’s one of those idiomatic language things.

The guy in the apartment is wearing slippers because Russians consider wearing your street shoes in the house as being бескултурний (beskulturny: “uncultured”, uncouth, “below the salt”, “simply not done”). As one Russian gal said, “Do you want your baby crawling on the same floor that you’ve clomped on in your dirty old shoes? Yuck!” By the way, French Canadians have a similar custom…
