On Saturday, Yuri Ryzhenkov, Yuri Zinchenko, and Enver Tkitishvili, the heads of Metinvest, Ilyich Iron & Steel Works, and Azovstal Iron & Steel Works, jointly announced, “We decided to create, jointly with municipal police, druzhinniki patrols from among smelter workers. From Sunday, they’d start patrolling the city to protect civilians. Blood flowed in our city. This happened on Victory Day, on 9 May, a day holy for us. The life of Mariupol is paralysed, the city economy is being destroyed, and normal operation of industrial enterprises, which means not only work and salaries for the city but also the economic foundation of the Donetsk Oblast and the entire Ukraine, is disrupted. We reject the practise of conducting large-scale battles in peaceful cities of the Donbass using the armed forces, heavy equipment, and armaments. The Ukrainian military must immediately leave the city. The authorities still can and must hear the voice of the Donbass. The authorities should ensure peace and quiet in cities for people to be able to peacefully live and work”. Metinvest is one of the leading Ukrainian manufacturers of iron ore raw materials and hot-rolled plate. In November 2010, the company completed its merger with the Ilyich Iron & Steel Works, which made it possible to double steelmaking production capacities to over 18.5 million tons annually.

On Sunday, an ITAR-TASS correspondent reported from the scene that a opolchenie strongpoint near Slavyansk is under mortar fire from junta forces. Opolchenie sources said that junta armed bands may attack after the shelling; there are frequent sounds of explosions. There’s no information on victims yet, as there’s problems in communicating with the forces involved. The strongpoint is near Andreyevka near a TV tower. The point under fire is at a railroad crossing, where opolchenie used goods wagons to block access to Slavyansk.

On Sunday, a RIA-Novosti correspondent reported intense shooting on the outskirts of Slavyansk, accompanied by shell bursts. The shooting took place near a feed-processing plant controlled by the opolchenie.
