Ankara Slams Trump’s Statement on Armenian Genocide as “Disinformation”

________________________

On Thursday, US President Trump commemorated the anniversary of the start of the Armenian genocide in a statement released by the White House, saying that the “Meds Yeghern”, a term used by Armenians to describe the 1915 events, was one of the worst atrocities in the history of the 20th century. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement:

We consider that the disinformation and false definitions contained in US President Trump’s written statement of 24 April 2017 regarding the 1915 events came from information pollution created over the years by some Armenian circles in the USA by means of propaganda. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the ceremony to commemorate the event at the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul on Monday. We expect that the new US Administration wouldn’t take credence in the one-sided historical narrative of these circles, known for their tendency to violence and hate speech, but that it should adopt an approach that takes into consideration the sufferings of all sides.

The Ottoman authorities killed about 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1923; they also expelled hundreds of thousands out of their territory. Turkey disputed the figure and denied the genocide, blaming the deaths on wartime irregularities (it occurred during World War I and the following Greco-Turkish War of 1918-23: editor).

Moscow Court Turns Down JW Bid to Fight Minyust Ban

_________________________

Our correspondent reported from the courtroom that Moscow’s Zamoskvoretsky Court rejected a lawsuit filed by the Jehovah’s Witnesses religious group against a Justice Ministry (Minyust) ruling on banning its activity in Russia. The JWs asked the court to overturn the Minyust ruling as illegal and order its cancellation. Judge Nelli Rubtsova said:

The court decided to reject the lawsuit of the religious organisation “Jehovah’s Witnesses Administrative Centre in Russia”.

On 20 April, the Supreme Court declared the Jehovah’s Witnesses to be an extremist organisation and outlawed its activity throughout Russia, upholding a Minyust request. The court declared the immediate shutdown of all 395 JW local chapters in Russia and transferred the organisation’s assets into state custody. The Jehovah’s Witnesses said it would appeal the decision. In its lawsuit, the Minyust pointed to various breaches in the organisation’s activities revealed during a surprise inspection, including violations of the Law on Counteracting Extremist Activities.

On 12 October 2016, Moscow’s Tverskoy Raion Court issued a warning to the Jehovah’s Witnesses Administrative Centre based on exposure of extremism there. Under Russian law, a religious association or organisation can lose registration (effective termination) if it doesn’t remedy the specified manifestations of extremism before the required deadline or if it displays any new ones.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses is an international religious organisation that disseminates offbeat views on Christian doctrine and offers idiosyncratic interpretations of many commonly accepted beliefs.

Lavrov sez: “We Won’t Leave the People of the Donbass in the Lurch”

War damage in the Donbass… the fighting continues… but for how much longer?

____________________________________

Minister of Foreign Affairs S V Lavrov said in an interview:

Our efforts will continue to aim at preventing “hotheads” in Kiev from starting a new cycle of violence in the southeast. In any case, we won’t leave the people of the Donbass in the lurch. The process of settlement in the southeast stalled because of the persistent reluctance of the Ukrainian leadership to fulfil its obligations under the Minsk Agreements. We’ll continue to work hard to make Kiev stop its blockade of the Donbass and proceed to a full implementation [of the Minsk Agreements]. We expect a similar attitude from the West, as they’ve repeatedly claimed that they want a speedy implementation of the Minsk Agreements, as they stated that there’s no alternative to them. The main point of the Minsk Agreements is that there should be direct dialogue between Kiev and Donetsk and Lugansk. Neither Russia nor the new US president nor anyone else will be able to do anything for the parties to the conflict, for a settlement depends upon direct negotiations between the parties on mutual guarantees of security and the principles of building a common future.
