President Medvedev congratulates FC Zenit Footballers

President Dmitri Medvedev (1965- ), with FC Zenit footballers in Moscow

President Medvedev congratulated the footballers of FC Zenit of St Petersburg on their victory in this year’s UEFA Cup, in a match with FC Glasgow Rangers on Wednesday which went 2-0. At a meeting in Moscow on Friday, he extended particular praise to the head coach of FC Zenit, Dick Advocaat. He also hoped for a better football season in Russia next year after last Wednesday’s triumph.

Russian national ice-hockey team makes it to the world championship finals

Sergei Fedorov scored the game winner and Yevgeny Nabokov made 24 saves for a shutout as Russia beat Finland 4-0 Friday to reach the final of the World Ice Hockey Championships in Québec City on Friday. Russia advanced to Sunday’s final where they will face off with the championships’ hosts Canada which ousted the Swedes 5:4 in a tense semi-final showdown played later that same day.

Maria Sharapova is through to the semi-finals at this year’s professional tournament in Rome

In tennis, Russia’s Maria Sharapova is through to the semi-finals at this year’s professional tournament in Rome in Italy. Her quarterfinal victory was over Switzerland’s Patty Schnieder. The score went 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. Maria’s next rival is Serbia’s Eelena Jankovic. Ms Sharapova is still the top-ranked female tennis player in the world, and is the highest-paid female athlete in the world as well.

In 2010, Moscow will host a big rally of vintage motor cars

Vintage car at rally in Moscow

In 2010, Moscow will host a big rally of vintage motor cars. Mayor Yuri Luzhkov announced this in Italy where he and his wife are sporting about in a 1936 Ligonda at the annual vintage car rally from Brescia to Rome to Brescia. 375 vintage motors are taking part, watched by thousands of enthusiastic spectators along the route.
