Abkhazia declared Thursday, 14 August, as a day of mourning for the victims of the Georgian invasion of South Ossetia. This date also coincides with the 16th anniversary of the beginning of the Georgian-Abkhazian war in 1992. The decree concerning this was signed by Abkhazian President Sergei Bagapsh. Flags shall be flown at half-staff and all places of entertainment shall be closed. “After trampling on all international obligations for a peaceful settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict it had agreed to, on 8 August 2008, the Georgian forces illegally invaded South Ossetia using aircraft, tanks, and infantry”, the presidential decree read. “As a result of the invasion by Georgia, genocide was unleashed against the South Ossetian people, thousands of innocent civilians died, the city of Tskhinvali and ten other towns were destroyed, and the peacekeeping contingent of the Russian forces was attacked, resulting in losses”, the decree noted.
