‘Attsa My Boy… Hopko Declares for Stokoe… Openly Defies Fester… Quo Vadis Bobby?

Read this:

7 March 2011

Dear fathers, brothers and sisters in Christ,

Asking your forgiveness on this first day of Great Lent, I beg you to trust, honour, and support the Synod of Bishops of our Orthodox Church in America, together with the Metropolitan Council and Chancery staff, in their unanimous efforts to fulfil their duties responsibly, which now most sadly include insisting upon and providing for proper counsel and care for our gravely troubled Metropolitan Jonah.

I also ask you to trust, honour, and support Mark Stokoe’s continued efforts through OCANews to report, question, criticise, and comment on the words and deeds of our Orthodox Church leaders for the sake of securing their best possible conduct of their God-given duties.

And, while respecting his right to speak and act as he sees fit, I also ask you not to trust, honour, or support Fr Joseph Fester’s opinions and views since his record hardly demonstrates worthiness of serious consideration.

May the Lord forgive our sins and failures. And may He guide and protect us in every way.

Protopresbyter Thomas Hopko

Dean Emeritus

This means that Thomas Hopko has thrown his support behind the Stokoe/Wheeler/Kishkovsky faction… opposing Fester means that he’s opposing JP, but there’s an open question now… on which side is Bobby going to fall? You see, it’s not a simple “us vs them” equation amongst the autocephalists. There are three competing factions… one headed by Lyonyo Kishkovsky, another by Bobby K, and the third by JP and his HOOMie minions. The factions headed by Kishkovsky and Bobby are down n’ dirty mortal enemies; the feud goes back at least thirty years. JP’s faction is newer, being mainly comprised of recent konvertsy (the hard core of his support being the HOOMie cultists). It’s no surprise that Hopko backed Stokoe… his son was in tight with Paul Hunchak and Eric Wheeler, who’re long-time partners in crime with Stokoe. This is Much Ado About Nothing. Nothing has changed in an essential sense, save for the fact that Hopko has declared publicly his opposition to JP’s faction… but that was deducible from his son’s relationships with Stokoe’s pals.

After the Silver letter, Stokoe is grasping for every shred of legitimisation that he can snatch. You’ll note that Stokoe is acting as though the Silver letter didn’t exist. When John Whiteford made some nasty comments concerning me, I addressed him directly, via a post on my site, and I warned him to back off. Someone warned me about a possible backstab from Iggy… I addressed that directly, too. Stokoe is a punk coward… he won’t face up to his attackers. This means that he’ a slinking skulker; that sort is the kind that backstabs and double-crosses, and they do it with a pious look on their face, too, no less.

Is this das Ende for JP? Frankly, Hopko should’ve kept his southern-fried yap shut… the only upshot of this is that Bobby and JP may make a tactical alliance, for self-preservation’s sake. El Gordo is dumber than dirt, but BP and Matthew Tate aren’t. It won’t keep Fathausen afloat… it’ll just prolong the death throes. However, the task of putting down JP will be much harder if Bobby allies himself with him. Furthermore, not only will Bobby probably make a pact with the Mad Monk, there’s Dickie Wood to consider. He’s been a chameleon. That is to say, he’s a “zebra”… is he a white horse with black stripes or a black horse with white stripes? As Wood lacks any academic qualifications for the priesthood (much like Gregory Jensen), one could expect him to back JP, but he could bolt at any time. Would he back Bobby? Would he back Kishkovsky? He wouldn’t really back JP… he’s not that barmy.

In short… ho hum. It’s just another manoeuvre on the part of the duelling autocephalist cabals. The only certain thing is that there won’t be any action from the Centre (save for an emergency) until after Easter. The Great Lent is a busy time for His Holiness, and his schedule is chock-a-block, and it was set months ago. That’s about all that there is to say…

Feast and Fast… the rhythm of the Church Year… this is something that’s instinctual to all Christians, no matter how much or how little one attends services. It’s something absolutely foreign to the Sectarian… their “space” is sterile and lifeless… with no joy or no meditation… just an unrelieved joylessness. Whether one likes it or not, Rodrigo Borgia was more of a Christian than Girolamo Savonarola was. That is to say, one really shouldn’t be a Borgia, but if the choice is between being a Borgia or being a Savonarola, the choice is clear. A Bonfire of the Vanities isn’t pleasing to God… never forget that.

This is how we celebrate before going into the Lent. Now, we’re on that journey… to every thing, there is a season.

Winged Expressions

The Russian language is rich with all kinds of expressions that have become so commonplace in our everyday vocabulary that we even have a dedicated term for them… we call them “winged expressions”. Let’s look at the meaning and history of some interesting phrases that let you glimpse the Russian way of thinking. Take, for instance, “bear service”.

Once upon a busy reporting period, when the managers and accountants were busy trying to negotiate all sorts of pressing deadlines, a funny thing happened. A new member of staff was standing deep in thought by a paper shredder. He actually needed to photocopy the annual report, but absent-mindedly wandered over to the wrong machine. A colleague passing by decided to help him out, and, without saying a word, put the wad of documents through the shredder. In other words, they rendered a disservice, it was more of a hindrance than a help, it did more harm than good… in Russian, we call this a case of “bear service”… an idiom reserved for help provided so awkwardly and clumsily that it only results in trouble.

The idea of “bear service” comes from a work of the well-known Russian fabulist Ivan Krylov, entitled The Hermit and the Bear, published in 1808. Once, the two protagonist-friends were resting, the Hermit fell asleep, so, the Bear decided it would be kind to shoo away the flies. This is how he got rid of the most persistent one:

With all his might, he launched a rock between the eyes, so well delivered was the bear’s hit that it was the demise of Misha’s friend.

This is the story behind this “winged expression” that’s become so deeply ingrained in the Russian language that it’s bandied about on all but a daily basis. Meanwhile, what prompts people to render these “bear services”? Strangely enough, it’s kindness and good intent. Such “help” might come from a passer-by with an all-consuming urge to “help” others or from someone close who cares a little too much for your wellbeing. Nevertheless, help should always be well considered, proceeding from the idea, “first, do no harm”. Attentiveness and sensitivity… these are the best safeguards against “bear services”.

Editor’s Note:

I was searching for something that would illustrate the psychology of extremists such as Mark Stokoe… I’ve found it. Both he and JP are autocephalist nutters… there’s not an iota of difference between them in that. As a wit once said of the difference between Sadaam Hussein and Hafez al Asad, “You know, it’s the Warm Baath and Cold Baath Parties”.

Mark Stokoe is placing the interests of his faction above his underlying cause, interestingly enough. That is, he’ll attack other autocephalists because they’re not part of the Kishkovsky cabal. Fester and Silver are equally stupid… they’re putting the interest of the Kondratick splinter above self-preservation. JP is simply barmy… he believes in the Brum Doctrine, chapter and verse (he’s a Modern Major General and Autocrat of the Breakfast Table, too). In the end, the only result of all this kafuffle will be that they’ll weaken the autocephalist cause. That is, they’re all performing “bear service”… in the most clumsy and shortsighted manner possible. It’ll end with the termination of the OCA’s autocephaly, and such internecine bickering will probably hasten its demise. There’s not a tinker’s damn worth of difference between JP, Stokoe, and Kondratick (and their hangers-on)… yet, they’re slinging rocks at one another. With friends like this, autocephaly needs no enemies.

One last thing… Mr Stokoe was preening on his website yesterday that he signed his name, but his critics didn’t… Mr Stokoe, I’ve ALWAYS signed my name… I guess that I don’t count. I’m not an autocephalist or a Syosset insider or part of the SVS duck pond… that means that I’m not a human being. Drat…
