Metropolitan Maximos Aghiorgoussis of Pittsburgh (GOAA/EP) (1935- ), former professor at Christ the Saviour Seminary, Johnstown PA… I knew that he had crank health when he didn’t show for Metropolitan Nicholas’ funeral in March…
______________________________
Today, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America announced that Metropolitan Maximos Aghiorgoussis of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Pittsburgh resigned for health reasons; the 76-year-old bishop has led the Pittsburgh diocese since 1979. Metropolitan Maximos was the son of a priest, born on the island of Chios in Greece; he went on to become a prominent Orthodox theologian, encouraging a monastic revival in the United States. After suffering a head injury in a fall six years ago, his health has deteriorated. Metropolitan Nicholas Pissare of Detroit, a former chancellor of the Pittsburgh diocese, will serve as locum tenens, or temporary administrator, of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Pittsburgh until the election of a new metropolitan.
